 From Wikipedia:

In this amateur talent contest, three celebrity panelists audition a series of acts - some good, some hilariously awful, all nonprofessional - and cut off the losers mid-performance by striking an enormous onstage gong.

Yup it was already discussed in this thread

The Romans called the Greeks "Oriental". But no, it's not a standard term and hasn't been for a long long time.

I had no idea.

It’s a term I’m sure I have used in a social context to describe something that is poorly organized (people also use ‘amateur hour’). I haven’t had anyone ask me what I was talking about that I remember. Maybe because for those that remember the show the meaning is obvious.

I remember - and loved - the show (JP Morgan was insane and hilarious, and I am certain that they were all as high as kytes for every minute of it - which added to the humour). And I have used the term all my life, to denote a chaotic mess, a (funny) disaster. A ####-show, if you will.
Never had any idea that it was a Canadianism though. And I don't recall any resistance from American relatives or friends, when using it (which I think I do a lot)

I sometimes wonder about that. Wouldn't it be better for their development to play against professionals in the ECHL than put up ridiculous numbers against teenagers? Especially for someone like Bell who has an ELC.

Kerins played in Rapid City last year but I'm not sure if it's a similar situation with respect to contractual status and age.

I don’t think it is. It was an LA-based American show.

I live on the US east coast. Just asked some friends here. They know it and use it.

Also, this was a super great/weird movie starring Sam Rockwell as Chuck Barris, the host of the Gong Show, who was actually a CIA operative and assassin. No joke.

I personally think ‘would of’ instead of ‘would have’ / ‘would’ve’ is even worse (would / could)

I just realized the quote in your signature is from 2008. I wonder what they would have offered to do if you claimed Giordano would win a Norris and still be playing in 2024.

It's a great story but it isn't true. Barris made it up, and wrote a best-seller.

I already apologized for the other thing. I'm talking about Bell and ECHL/junior.
