Jets have been more or less the same team for a long time not really shocking they were a little sharper
Flames top players made the big plays when it mattered

Having a winger to click with Huberdeau.

Lol when did Milano enter the conversation and why?
The Capitals are picking up our scraps and have/will be no better for it.

He also sucked in 2020-21.
So he has 2 poor years and one good year as a Flame, with one awful playoff series against the teams top rival to bookend his one good season.
So I don't blame those fans at all for not giving him the benefit of the doubt. The body of work speaks for itself.
That said, hope he rebounds and does great.

But the Capitals proved that they knew what they were doing. They took a player from the bottom-feeding, 93-point Flames and used him to build their own mighty 80-point juggernaut. All Milano needed was a real team to play for, and they conquered the universe together.
This year, the Flames took Greer, a completely useless player from the hopelessly bad 135-point Bruins, and inexplicably gave him a roster spot. I mean, if Conroy had his heart set on dumpster-diving, he could at least have picked a dumpster in a decent neighbourhood!
(Am I doing it right?)

I’m no Markstrom honk, but it’s a bit disingenuous to yadda yadda his series against Dallas when he was every bit as dominant as Oettinger and broke Kiprusoff’s record for save percentage in a single series (.943).
This year, he’s a .919 goalie.
See how it goes.

The shortened season was kind of a mixed bag. He started off well, struggled after he came back from a concussion that many think he wasn't completely over, and then started to look like he was recovering but the team ran out of time.
Had they got another 30 games or whatever it was under Sutter they maybe end up passing Montreal and his stats get better and nobody is really complaining because they atleast made the playoffs.

- Zadorov with a number of big hits. Good to see.
- Jets controlled time of possession but the Flames did a fairly good job of limiting chance in the last 2 periods. It was almost a reverse flames game from last season.
- Of the three players that had big down years Markstrom and Mangiapane both looked good. Not sure on Huberdeau yet. Didn’t notice him much until the last couple of minutes.
- agree with some other posts that the four lines look a lot more balanced than last year.
Solid first game. Hopefully they can build on it.

The problem was the Flames, not the player, which is why he was on a PTO to start with and after his great pre-season/camp was able to clear waivers.
I am not sure how often every team in the league has to look at a guy and say no thanks, in this case twice in a short period of time for Milano, before we can say maybe it is on the player not one single team/coach.

Welcome to hockey. What do you think people are going to focus on more between those two series?
He's .919 in one game. Agreed, let's see.
I hope he does well but ####, if you think I'm going to let the Edmonton performance go just cause he went toe to toe with Oettinger in round one one year then you're out to lunch.
I don't know why people rush to his defense to this day. He could've been a 20th ranked goalie last year and the team would be a top 3 pacific team, but he was a 40-50th ranked goalie and dragged them down just barely enough to miss.
He demonstrated his ability last night and essentially what was expected of him when he was signed here to a 6x6. He's brought THAT game in maybe 30% of the games he's started here. That's the standard we should expect and for the most part haven't gotten. .919 isn't outlandish either, as it was one time in line with his career average.
I'm just not in the business of making excuses/maintaining good will for guys longer than they've earned it. And I literally made the "I like Markstrom" thread mid last season...
I wish him well but if he pumpkins again I'll switch my allegiance to Wolf or whoever else can step up in the blink of an eye. No more patience of any kind of repeat of that train wreck .
So yes. Well done Marky. Now do that 30-40 more times.

I think that Markstrom would be the first to acknowledge he did not play well last season. There are many possible reasons, some within his control and some outside his control. The Oilers series was challenging for the Flames as a whole - from my perspective. If you let McDavid walk-in multiple times a game, then you are going to have a tough series even if you have more shots.
I do want to push back on the .919 is the standard that should be expected every year. A career save percentage of .919 over a long enough period of time would put you into pretty small company and among some of the best to play the position. Even last year, a save percentage of .919 is tied for sixth in the league.
I have posted many times that I believe Markstrom was the primary reason (not the sole reason) the Flames did not make the playoffs, but I think your expectations of him are too high. If he returns to his career average of .909 this year, then the Flames have received what they bargained for.

It's because of dummies who can't let things go, and insist on rehashing distant history like this:

You're clearly not a very die hard Flames fan if you weigh a Flames/Oilers series the same as a Flames/Stars series (where Dallas was the 8th seed and Flames the #1 seed).
Some things just aren't easily forgiven.
So maybe. But maybe you're the dummy who isn't aware or forgot what board he's on.
I made a pro-Markstrom thread when every one was ripping him, so I gave him plenty of leeway and good will.

He’s a bit of an awkward player in that his true mould is that of a top 4 puck moving defenseman, which he was projected to be and showed flashes of in Chicago, but never panned out as quite good enough to be a true puck mover. So he’s kind of stuck in the middle, and not really good enough at any one thing to be a specialist, but not good enough all around be a top 4 guy.
I thought he was decent last night. I think there will be some times when he flashes brilliance and other times when he makes boneheaded mistakes both positionally and getting muscled off the puck.
From what I’ve seen I don’t mind him and I don’t think ultimately we’ll regret having him around. He reminds me a bit of a slightly poorer man’s Erik Gustafsson, which doesn’t sound all that great now that I see it on paper lol. He’ll be good to rotate in and out with Gilbert, who is a very different style player, depending on the opponent.

If you only watched the last game
the media and coaching staff were raving about his preseason play...he looked very solid in the other games
