Nurse got paid a year before he was set to be a UFA so not a great example and also was a deal that was instantly hated on by the fans and media.
The Flames made some big mistakes with how they handled their RFA’s because they felt they had the base to build around d these guys and win while they had cheaper deals. Squeezing Gaudreau on 1.5-2.5M AAV likely cost the team the difference between a 6-8 year deal. Instead they went out and spent the extra money on guys like Brouwer, Neal, Coleman. I think there was definitely a path to pay Tkachuk on a 6-8 year deal instead of the 3 year deal he signed but having Frolik and the Neal/Lucic contract made it hard to find the space. The Monahan deal ended up not working out long term but the team also did not need to make the trade to get rid of him and could have rode that contract out.
Treliiving loved the 6 year term. Johnny, Dougie, Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson, as RFA. I think with your core guys you need to try and push for that max term out of ELC. I like the gambles taken by the Devils, Sens and Sabres recently.

For Tkachuk, my impression is he was looking to be a leader for a team who believes in him.
The Flames refused to do this. They showed him that they did not believe in him by nickle and diming and short contracts. They showed him they did not believe in him by prioritizing signing washed up vets over committing to him. They showed him they did not believe in him by not giving him a path to becoming captain, and doubled down by bringing in a coach who refused to let any player be captain. They showed him they did not believe in him by keeping his ice time down.
Florida showed him they believed in him. They commited long term first chance they got. They made him their captian. They gave him the ice time. They even pumped him up in the media as their leader.
Good on the Sabres for being willing to bet on their own players. The odds of big deals backfiring is much lower for young players than old ones.

You can't tell me a $1M Lucic with a $6M cap hit couldn't have been sent to a cap floor team for less than a first.
|
There were no cap floor teams last season, and Lucic had an NTC.

We all know the organization forewent a bunch of LTIR credits against the cap by choice.

No, they just didn't go over the cap and therefore didn't need to use LTIR.

Barkov is still the Panthers' captain. But your point isn't far off. The Flames could've and probably should've made Tkachuk the captain.

I hear you. And that is often the case.
But what speaks louder than both? Money. If we showed it to him, i bet he would have signed.

Disagree
Tkachuk was given top 6 minutes since the second he was drafted.
They offered him $10.5M.
The coach didn't want to make him (or anybody else captain). The GM signed him to a $7M bridge coming off a 78 point season, which was still fair.
The Flames had a lot of faith in Tkachuk. He didn't want to be here anymore. If he wanted to be here he's likely the captain making $10.5M per year.

And there was buzz of a deal that would have seen Lucic dealt.
And then it didn’t happen
Which suggests he triggered his ntc

My take is he wanted to go back to the states to a contender. When he saw Gaudreau leave he knew we weren’t one.
Not to mention +30 in Fla when it’s-30 here. As well as a better tax regime.

Does this thread make anyone else remember Snap "I've got the power". Much rather reminise about that than the Tkachuck stuff again.

True… but if it would have taken $10 million a year at that point in his career, it's no surprise the team passed.
I mean, almost any player will sign with any given team if they overpay him enough. It's just not a smart way to do business.

Right. I apologize for going off topic.
Now, back to the subject of this thread… How about that Jankowski?

Here I am thinking we would be talking about Own Power when I see the thread is updated. Silly me. I guess I should assume every thread is about Tkachuk from here on out.

Betting long term on your top talent like Matthew Tkachuk is something you absolutely do. Not bridging him for Michael Frolik

So, 8.5 is something like 7M when Chuckie was extended the first time. Which is what he got for 3 years (plus a 9M guaranteed extra year). You think they didn't try that number on him for 8 years? Keeping Frolik would not have gotten in the way of that deal.

For sure. At that point in time it would have.
But I mean instead of that 3 year bridge, what would it have been if we went long then? 8x8? Would have been the best contract in hockey. It would be so wizard.

I think Chuckie's number was at elast what he was paid his last year (and therefore his QO). In other words, $9M. And he wanted 6 years. So $9M or more x6.
