Calgary Flames 2023-24 attendance
Attendance to the home opener was only 17,414 according to NHL. That is absolutely terrible given the Canadian team opponent and typical high draw of the season open.
Given how poorly the home opener was attended, attendance numbers are a topic worth tracking through the season.
Outside of the pandemic, this could very well be the worst attended season in over 20 years. Per season attendance of the young-gun era of 1995-03 ranged from 15,300-18,000. The flames are seemingly facing these types of attendance numbers again this year.
Attendance by game this year
Game 1 - 17,414
Game 2 - 16,800
Game 3 - 16,898
Game 4 - 16,786
Game 5 - 16,975
Attendance by year
1999-00: 15,300
2000-01: 16,600
2001-02: 15,700
2002-03: 16,600
2004-14: 19,289
2014-15: 19,100
2015-16: 19,100
2016-17: 18,700
2017-18: 18,900
2018-19: 18,500
2019-20: 18,800
2022-23: 18,000
2023-24: 17,000

We are at a period of the highest inflation Canadians have seen since the 80's so a lot of people have to cut down on luxury expenditures such as professional sports tickets. Also a lot of fans didn't enjoy last season so it's kind of a worst case scenario for the Flames.

Weird… I didn’t see an empty seat in the building. Can’t speak for PL.

Watching last night, I felt like I had the least emotional connection to the players I've ever had as a long time fan.
We've always had at least a couple home grown stars on the team whether it was MacInnis/Nieuwendyk, Fleury(I know, but he was popular at the time), and then into the Iginla/Giordano/Phaneuf/Brodie years, it was a let down after Iggy left, but we still had Johnny/Giordano and then Tkachuk came along.
When your biggest stars are new guys we handed big contracts to, who were more or less busts their first year, it's tough to have any kind of connection to anything but the jersey.

Last night was the deepest emotional connection I’ve ever felt with a hockey team. This group touches me deep down in the cockles of my heart.

I do get where you're coming from, but Andersson is a top-pair D-man. Eat Bread stood up last night and could, hopefully, take another big step in his career this season.
A fair bit of promise in Coronato and Pelletier too.

With the price of everything, this is not surprising. I do wonder however what the attendance would be if the Flames went through a rebuild.

It wouldn't be a problem if they lowered the cost of tickets during a rebuild.

I feel this is largely economy driven. The lack of the success of the Flames last season would have almost little impact to attendance if people were doing well and not worried about savings and necessities.

I'm shocked anyone these days still has enough disposable income to justify attending an NHL game & drinking $15 beers.

Eye test last night to me felt as crowded as it has been for a "big" regular season game. Did not see as many empty seats as last season, foyer was jammed. My row last season was usually empty last night was packed.

No superstars, inflation, coming off a boring season with high apathy, worst arena in the league...
It's not surprising.
We have to remember that people who spend a lot of time on CP are amongst the more die hard variety. Your average citizen probably lost a lot of passion last season.

That and 0 cup runs in 20 years, agreed with the it's not surprising comment. I would have been surprised if it was a sellout actually.

I'm at the stage where I haven't even reactivated the Sportsnet package on cable, never mind buying tickets to the actual game. The high prices combined with a mediocre product have slowly ground me into being a fair-weather Flames fan, so I'm in wait and see mode.

Maybe below the cockles, maybe in the sub cockle area?

Big Z is one of the most out spoken players in the league. He's charismatic and a great human. Having him on the Flames is pretty cool. He's not home grown, but if you can't connect with a player like that then maybe it's you?
