Whatever. Trade him. Run Kadri and Backlund as your top 2 centers for the next season or two. Use assets to trade for a Shane Pinto like young center and rejoice for not having 9+ locked up on a player of his calibre. Even if you are top place in the conference at the trade deadline sell and retain. Don’t let the door hit your arse on the way out Lindy.

I bet the best next deal he gets starts with a 7

Who on Earth would give Lindholm $72M over only 7 years starting when he's a year older?

No one.

So yeah he's overplaying his hand. Substantially.

Ok, who can we trade Lindholm to right now and not necessarily tank? Would Florida give us Lundell +2nd if he resigned right away?

More than a bit I would say.
Unless he signs an 8 year contract with a team he's eventually traded to, he would have to get $10.2x7 year contract as a FA to match our $9x8 offer. There's no way in hell anyone is giving Lindholm $10.2.
This doesn't really feel like a money issue.

And that’s okay. If he doesn’t want to be here then send him out and get players who do. We have a young centre on the Wranglers that seems close to cracking the top 9 ( not a replacement but who would be).

I maintain that Lindy's market value is still 8.5. Like what his closest comparables signed for.

And that's probably the absolute ceiling for what he'd get on the open market, probably with a less competitive team that has space, and of course for a year less, giving up additional millions.

Good luck with that sir.

Kinda blown away Lindholm is betting on himself in this fashion. I bet this year he puts up 60 points and loses about $10MM based on what the Flames were offering compared to what he gets on his next deal.

I actually think the flames could shake off a Lindholm loss better than a Hanifin loss at this point, especially with no Kylington.

It's not ideal, but you have a lot of guys who can slide in to a C role and perhaps be decent in a top 6 role. Not too broken up about this.

Either way it's more beneficial for the Flames to wait. If he shows chemistry with Huberdeau puts up 20points in the first 20 games and is a +10 then yeah give him $9.3M.

If he's back to 60P pace, without developing any chemistry then he'd be a rental at the deadline.

They would likely be more inclined to do a Lindholm for Reinhart swap as it would save them a little cap to aid in loading up come trade deadline.

Reinhart can play both centre and RW and would provide likely similar output to Lindy offensively. Lindholm is a better player defensively which would require Florida to slightly sweeten the pot for both the savings and better defensive play.

I also don't understand how all of the LTIR savings come into play at the moment so I don't even know if this is feasible.

Given where the flames are, Lindholm not signing and forcing himself to perform during the season is the best case scenario.

Lindholm is above average at many things but not elite at really any particular skill. Move on from him.

100% trade Lindholm.

Things are going to get awkward for him here anyways once his pal Markstrom becomes the backup goalie.

1st + 2nd + Lafreniere + ? for Lindholm @50% retained.

Laf needs a change of scenery. We also need additional 1sts to help improve Tig Iginla odds.

Wow if Lindholm turned down 9 x 8 then he either doesn’t want to re-sign in Calgary or he isn’t smart because not many teams if any would give him more then that. Seems like he doesn’t want to stay with that info.

If they can't re-sign him I hope it forces them into a rebuild and his return at the deadline kicks it off.

Way better chance the Flames are a team worth watching when they move into their new building if they bite the bullet this season rather than bet on an ancient core for the next 7 years.

I'd throw shade at Lindy for his hardballing if I secretly didn't really want option B.

I've cheered for "just get in" Flames teams for the last two decades with nothing to show for it. I'd like for us to not define insanity all over again. Please break the cycle of pain.

Given that you have also joined the club, it seems highly likely that Lindholm will be traded in-season. All I can say is that he had better get his act together and perform, rather than letting his disinterest show, if he wants to maximize his next contract, wherever he chooses to go. Less than a PPG season is highly unlikely to get him a $72M contract next summer.

He's not worth handicapping the team for the foreseeable future just because he can play 1C and not look out of place.

He still doesn't exactly excel in the role. He's a good, if not passable placeholder who on most nights will be out performed by the opposing team's top center, at least offensively.

He's your 2C on a contender.

Agreed with what many others have said, Lindholm is going to Gaudreau himself and end up leaving significant money on the table. I see him signing a 7x7 or 7/7.5 million deal in the offseason. That's almost 20 million left on the table. It's disappointing, but also a relief in a sense.

I'm sick and tired of the Flames overpaying for players. Let's wait out the next 2-3 seasons, and try and convince players to sign up once the new arena is finished. Why burn up our cap room before then? Keep going on the retool until then, sign players that sincerely want to be here, acquire as many assets as possible, and rebuild through the draft.

I really don't understand why ownership won't embrace the rebuild... what's the advantage in "going for it" every year? Ticket sales will be similar, and even if they somehow made the playoffs they would be an early round casualty. Is there really that much revenue from the short playoff runs they've had in recent years?

In this market a 1st + 2nd for Lindy would suffice.
