Mexico is known as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, do you really expect people to believe what comes out of their mouths? This is a land where visitors are advised to carry around wads of cash, so they can pay off the cops, of course people are going to question their authority.

The fact of the matter is, he might have indeed falled of a balcony. But with Mexicos track record, I dont blame anyone for not believing them. Racism has nothing to do with it, history does.
I bet the public will never know the true story. What a sad story makes a person really think twice about picking Mexico as a location for a Vacation.

I think we will once a canadian investigation of the victim is complete. IMO there is a huge difference in the injuries sustained in a fall compared to a beating, a difference that will probably be detected right away once the right people are involved. I don't want to sound racist, but I won't be happy until canadian authorities release their findings on the matter.

Well I do think that the Mexican authorities could be a touch shoddy and that when it comes to foreigners their investigation standards may not be perceived to be as high as ours. Of course it might be due to the fact that they don't have the money to put into investigating crimes based on a per crime basis that we do in Canada or the U.S.A. for that matter. Plus are they really obligated to pour more resources into crimes against foreigners than they do into crimes against native Mexicans?

In this case I hear that the victims brother says he was attacked outside a night club. By no means is that acceptable, but I do think that could have happened anywhere be it Mexico, Brazil, Sylvan Lake Alberta. Turn on the news any day in a major Canadian city. At some point during the month odds are you'll hear of an attack against someone outside a night club.

The issue is the denial. If I was attacked and murdered on Sylvan Lake would the RCMP say I fell off the waterslide for fear that the A&W down the street might lose some money? I doubt it.

If a substantial portion of their economy is based on the tourist industry, then I would think yes. What is more expensive in the long run - a credible investigation or a reduction in tourists?

I feel nothing but sympathy for the family of this gentleman. What an absolutely terrible thing to happen, no matter how it happened.

I'd be interested whether this, and the other recent Canadian deaths in Mexico, will in fact lead people to give Mexico a miss for vacations. In my case it certainly will. I've travelled extensively in the past and, sure, bad things can happen anywhere. However, it seems that the Mexican authorities cannot be trusted either by reputation or actions.

Is there anybody else here who will reconsider visiting Mexico in light of these incidents?

What if you were a foreigner? I kidd, I kidd, I think the RCMP would conduct a fair investigation and I would trust them not to fabricate an excuse to close the investigation.

I mean it does look a bit sketchy what they say and I'm the first to admit I'm skeptical about what the Mexican authorities are claiming. I dont' mind if our government spends tax money to send the RCMP to investigate it either to try and find what actually occurred either. I don't think they need to issue anything like a travel ban, but a place like Mexico probably isn't that much different than a place like Brazil. If you leave the resort at the wrong type of night, you can run into trouble, and don't take the local authorities word.
