What are you doing looking over a week out for a forecast in Alberta...in the mountains? Bad Sainters7. Bad.

Just the word on the street, man. If it helps, I pretended I didn't hear it
(but it's also the same day the new Assassin's Creed drops, so at the least it's convenient timing anyway)

Wait, was the 40cm call for the mountains and not Calgary? I can live with that. I don't want to roll the winter bike yet.

El Nino means east coast gets ####ed by troughs/low pressure systems. Will go for Canada too.

Winter will be less precipitation and more sun in our neck of the woods, and major snowfall out east.

El Nino winter means warmer winters for us, right? I keep hearing people say it'll be a colder winter as a result (in Calgary) and I'm quite certain the last time we had an El Nino winter, it was almost sweater weather (for local Calgarians) for the vast majority of our Calgary winter?

Generally, yes.

But also less precipitation (which isn't necessarily good given this past season and the minimal snowpack). So milder, more high pressure systems in the PNW as warmer pacific water pushes north, and therefore, sunshine.

That's what I thought and Fuzz's infograph confirms what I was assuming.

There's a surprising amount of people just spewing BS about how this hot summer is going to mean a cold winter. I was starting to doubt my understanding/experience of an El Nino Calgary winter.

Fuzz's infograph is also confirming yet confusing me a little bit. Even if new people to Calgary are from the main cities of Vancouver and Toronto and still paying attention to news networks from those cities, that info seemingly would still be incorrect in terms of predicting a very cold winter in Calgary. I have no idea where they're getting that info from, but it seems like a very long chain of a ton of people just repeating that convo without checking to see if it's true.

Yeah, I don't get it. El Nino has always been associated with a warmer-than-usual winter in Western Canada.

I think that’s more to do with the idea that when ever we get something nice (hot summer if you ignore the smoke), mother nature is just setting us up for a weather pie to the face (brutally cold winter). No actual weather knowledge involved.

A warmer than normal winter's ahead

Quote:
Albertans can expect a warmer rest of fall and winter with an El Niño on the way.

According to Justin Shelley, a weather preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the last El Niño happened back in 2016.

"Usually, the impacts are most felt during the winter months here so in that December to February period," he said.

He said the El Niño is characterized as warmer than normal temperatures down along the Pacific Ocean along the equator.

As we await its arrival, we can expect to hit the mid 20s this long weekend.

A meteorologist came on CBC a few days and said that any forecasts that try to predict beyond 48 hours are essentially clickbait.

Now showing 22 for Sunday which isn't too shabby.
