I don't know if a full blown lights and camera press conference is needed, but it was definitely worth making an announcement if it is official now. After the deal in principle, it still felt like it could fall through.

Is this all that Eric Francis was referring to? Talk about underwhelming.

BREAKING
The new mountain-shaped Dome will double as coal storage facility, a War Room for the ongoing battle against cartoons such as Sasquatch (or whatever that Netflix cartoon was called), storing APP cash, AB Police Farce headquarters, Kananaskis logging storage (heck, better yet, maybe it'll be a sports team first: a log cabin themed arena), *insert ridiculous UCP initiative here*...
anyone else simultaneously feel disgusted, excited, indifferent, annoyed, worried about this new 'Dome deal?...
I'd love a new sports arena in our wonderful city, but also don't think it should be on the backs of taxpayers...no easy solutions I guess...

I haven't been there for a while, but the "Hot and Ready" warmer mostly blocks the view of the kitchen/prep area, but the menu board was positioned nice and high, and was very legible.

So if the provincial funding has come through, I believe this means the project is fully funded, and there are no financial issues anymore.
Basically a final green light for the project.
Next stop: Shovels in the ground.

I really do think those factors are overstated a bit. I don't think Edmonton's really seen much in the way of that

Meh, I think it did change the character of that very specific 2 block square of the ice district- but only by withdrawing all the activity and character from Churchill square 3 blocks away which is now a total hovel and frankly feels dangerous every time i'm there.
Basically, it just shifted the primary event space downtown because they didn't bring in many new permanent residents with the development to make it more lively or create capacity for new events.
It would have helped if Katz followed through on his development plan and actually built the other two towers that were supposed to frame the district...

Depending on who you talk to OEG kicked out or Boyle Street elected not to renew the lease in their location behind the arena. So if he wants now Katz can develop up there. But I think the LRT construction and making Churchill the hub has also impacted the square. But that's too much Edmonton talk.

I think Calgary has an advantage over Edmonton in that the area already hosts a major yearly event that brings people to it from all over the world.

The new Dome will be powered 100% on coal from the new coal plant at Lake Louise.
