I’ve been unfairly harsh towards Seravalli in the past, but his info has been pretty accurate.

That's very surprising. Must be the grey hair as I had him pegged for mid-40's.

I'm ok if Lindholm makes Larkin/Horvat money. He seems better then both of them and will be earning around the same. He seems like he will be a great player for most of that contract. I cant seem him taking less anyways.
If Hanifin is getting traded, I wonder if they wait until Kylington is ready to go as he seems to be the natural fit to replace Hanifin.
Or do you think they would aim to get a Dman back? I would prefer a top 6 RW personally

No, we don't realize anything of the kind. Please show us this list you have of NHL/AHL tweeners who have been traded for 1st and 2nd-round picks, instead of going in doofus-for-doofus deals or on waivers for nothing.

Valimaki was solidly in the trade for another struggling prospect or throw in territory in a trade. If Tre could have got a second for Philips he would have been traded.

Friedman on Lindholm:
Quote:
9. One night in Calgary has convinced me of one thing: the mood among the Flames is much better than last season. Very, very different vibe — in a good way. Mikael Backlund’s extension is a great sign, and others are positively reconsidering their futures. But I don’t get the sense anything is close, yet. And it’s possible Elias Lindholm’s number is going to be higher than I initially thought — in the $9 million range.

If it’s an 8 year deal, I just can’t see it being 9+ mill.
No team would pay 9.5+ on a 7 year deal. Hardly any decent teams even have cap space.

Bruins are the biggest leverage Lindholm has. They free up cap space this offseason and need two top six centers.

I value the 9m in space over re-signing Lindholm.
I am beginning to realize that in a cap world we should be in the mindset of letting someone walk without getting anything in return is far better than just signing a player to “get value”.
Trading an expiring vet at the TDL (if applicable) > Gaining cap space > signing a veteran’s retirement contract.

Cap space doesn't play though. Let's say they let Huberdeau and Weegar walk for nothing then they are in the same place as trading them without getting assets. The right answer if you want to rebuild is trade the players and take on cap dumps to get value.

But the Bruins almost never overpay anyone. It’s why they’ve been competitive so long. Can’t see them throwing that out the window now.
Though to be fair, it’s possible Lindholm would sign there for less.

The Lindholm situation is interesting as it really seems like both sides are grinding to get a deal done before Wednesday. You had to think the Flames had a vision where they afforded all of Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Lindholm so they still must feel like they have room to pay him considering Huberdeau and Kadri are a cheaper combo than Johnny and Chucky would have been.
Lindholm has been here for 5 years and missed 3 games total in that span and at least 1 was being held out for the final game of 2019 when they had the division and conference tied up. He has averaged 72pts and 31 goals per 82 games as a flame and is known as a solid 2 way player who doesn’t cheat the defensive side. The only years Johnny got to 99 and 115 points were when he played the entire season with Lindholm. Toffoli saw a huge career year getting to play with Lindholm for the entire season. I see why the Flames are trying hard to keep him and he is likely one of the safer players to extend into his 30’s. It would be a no brainer if they didn’t have the Kadri contract on the books or Huberdeau looked anything close to a $10.5M player but they do have 33 year old Kadri signed for 6 more years and Huberdeau could be an albatross very soon so it is a delicate negotiation and far from a slam dunk signing at the rumored ask

Dude, don’t get ahead of yourself. Kadri isn’t 33 until tomorrow.
Seriously though I think you are bang on Vinny01, Kadri and huberdeau make it difficult to commit so many years to another aging player. If the Flames knew what some of their prospect centres might become it would be easier to let Lindholm walk
Sutter and treliving, imo, really made Conroys job this summer even more difficult by not allowing prospects to get extended looks in the last couple of years

I think the Flames would be more competitive over the 8 years of a potential Lindholm contract at ~$9 million AAV by not re-signing him.

Without Lindholm do you think the team goes from bubble playoff team to a bottom 5 team? I am still not convinced they rebuild with Lindholm gone and they will spend that cap space on worse players than Lindholm.

Lindholm and Huberdeau also have 0 chemistry. Negative chemistry even.
They go together like garlic and peanut butter.
Huberdeau and Kadri don't really jive that well either. Since they're both already signed, and theoretically exist on two different top 6 lines, I don't know where we would slot lindy even if we signed him. Unless we want Kadri as our defacto 3 c or are willing to try lindy as a RW on his line.

I'd like to think that without Lindholm, they could read the tea leaves, but I think you are right. But that's not really why I think the team would be more competitive over those 8 years. I place too much value on cap space and just think that re-signing Lindholm at a big AAV reduces the ceiling for this team over that span.
However, I like our odds of finding a difference maker picking 8-12th rather than 12-16th.
