I believe I read that Zary is still the only 2020 first rounder to not play a single game in the NHL. I hope he earns a look after a strong camp even if it is just to reward a great second year as a pro and 2 solid main camps over the past 2 years.

I guess this means the team will have to use LTIR to exceed the cap, which kind of sucks.

Well it's looking like Schwindt and Hunt are the 12th, and 13th forwards at this point, and who plays opening night will be dependent upon where Ruzicka slots in the lineup.

If Zary is going to be an impact player one day you certainly hope that at 22 years old he is at least making a strong case for NHL playing time.

Not quite but super close. That said hardly anyone drafted after Zary has played as of yet. It would be great to get him in some action this season and with injuries it should happen

I am hoping Zary makes the team over Hunt. Hunt has played himself onto the team IMO, but like Conroy was quick to point out when he was discussing PTOs earlier this offseason (and yes, I know Hunt isn't a PTO), these vets almost always look better than the rookies during preseason when they are trying to fight for a spot, but they will fade and the rookies will usually improve.
I would rather the spot be given to Zary and let him improve. If he ends up looking like he is drowning, then send him back to the AHL, but I do think he looks like a prospect that is ready for a good look, and should be able to at least tread water.
Sucks for Rooney and Pelletier. Rooney I thought looked better this preseason than he looked at any time last year. Maybe he didn't fit Darryl's system (or methods), or maybe he is 'fighting for his life now' after his essentially season-long demotion, but he has looked noticeably better so far. Tough luck for him, and this may end up costing him his NHL career. Pelletier is going to be missing a key chunk of his development time, and other prospects getting those reps may end up leapfrogging over him. With his character, I am sure he will catch up, but it certainly sucks considering the opportunity on the Flames this season.

Shakir Mukhamadullin! I forgot about that guy. I was pretty excited about him heading into the 2020 Draft.

Funny enough I remember in the 2020 draft thread there were posters who were so against the Flames drafting Braden Schneider at 19
Scheider has 124 NHL games under his belt already.

Well, I hate to be "that guy" but Zary has not really been given the opportunity to prove what he's capable of. The only "NHL" forward he has skated with during this preseason at any point has been Walker Duehr, and that was for just nine minutes of five on five time. It's kind of headscratching that a first round pick whom is coming of a good AHL season wouldn't at least get a look with some skilled NHL talent during preseason.
He's flashed his skillset (his PP goal) in the brief opportunity he has been given.

This is the third straight camp where IMO Zary has looked very good.

If they go the LTIR route (I don't think they have any choice now), Kylington, Rooney and Pelletier total $4,663,333 PLUS Rooney's $150k hit disappears. So it gives them a fair bit of space to play with, but they need to acquire a contract prior to day one, in order to get the total as high as possible, and thus make the LTIR actually count and be useful.
They could pick up a $3-4M contract right now (assuming there was anyone available)
