Powerplay Quarterback

Anyone that's concerned about his play, has to remember his first year here. He had a bad pre season, but he laughed when people were concerned. He's a starter, he just isn't gonna risk injury in the pre season.

I take back this thread.
Unless he does well, then I'm going to tell every one I told you so.

Flames will be fine. I have it on good authority that Markstrom will outperform Vasilevskiy for months.

You mean his first year here where he failed to get his team in the playoffs?

He was off to a good start that year. Then he was hurt and came back too soon, and suffered for it. Finished the year well once he got better.
The Flames scoring kept them out that year, as well as an inability to catch Ottawa when they sucked.

It was a short season too. I think had they got to play another 30 games or whatever it was they could have passed Montreal.

Woodlely from In Goal magazine had a visit with 960 about Markstrom
https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/flames-...-great-season/
Said Markstrom is 3rd in the league in their advanced numbers for goals saved above average (not public domain).
Also said Calgary's defense is more leaky this season and Markstrom has the 3rd lowest expected save percentage in the circuit.
Suggested he should be in the Vezina conversation.
Numbers we do see ...
Flames 5on5 xGA60
Last Year 2.41
This Year 2.51
Flames Short xGA60
Last Year 6.22
This Year 8.62
Flames All Situations xGA60
Last Year 2.77
This Year 3.09

Markstrom has been great, especially in the last stretch.
Evolving hockey also has Markstrom as 1st in the league in GSAx.
Money Puck has him 12th in GSAx, and 16th in GSAx/60(more than 3GP).
After the recent hot stretch, Markstrom is also almost back to his career average sv%. He has a .907sv% this year, and a .909sv% career.
If Markstrom was playing at the same level last year, then we would've easily been a playoff team.

Interesting stat in the Athletic goalie article about rebounds.
https://theathletic.com/5183441/2024...tats-rebounds/
Not sure where to find it on MoneyPuck.
Markstrom gives up the fifth most rebounds per save this year.
Quote:
Most rebounds per save
5. Jacob Markstrom (Calgary)
In 2020-21, Jacob Markstrom allowed the third-fewest rebounds per save in the league, but he’s slowly slipped from that level over the last three seasons. In 2021-22, he finished 24th in the metric. Last season he finished 59th, and this year he ranks 44th out of the 48 qualified goalies.
