My favorite part of the thread is the argument we're all indoctrinated to be pro bear because of teddy bears growing up. It's so utterly wild.

I've seen one grizzly in the wild in my entire life. You'd have convince me the bear population isn't very low.

I managed to spot 9 bears (3 grizzlies, 6 black) within about 11 days of driving up to Tuk and back last month. I have no idea what that means in terms of the overall bear population, but it was a pretty cool experience seeing each and every one of them (well, apart from the one that was dead on the side of the road).

Ah yes! But have you seen a Black Bear fight a Polar Bear in the ultimate duel of the Cosmos?

I know the articles keep saying that the bear was put down by the response team due to aggressive behaviour when they showed up. But I was reading a different article that I now can't find that said that bears typically don't hang out in a certain area for more than a few hours.
Assuming I didn't misread something about how long they typically hang out in certain areas, if the article said that there was a notification at 8PM about an attack and the bear was still there at 1AM, isn't that supposed to be considered odd behaviour for a bear to hang out for over 5 hours?

According to this on parks Canada website, 700 ish in Alberta on Provincial land and probably 16,000+ in BC? That's a heck of a huge difference.

I would assume the bear was protecting its bounty.

Another small hijack...
Snapped this a couple of years ago with my cellphone, without getting eaten by the bear.

Weirdest place I've seen 2 bears wrestling is 1006 11th Ave SW on a Saturday at 1am.

Would 1008 have been more appropriate?

A family member of the couple fatally attacked by a grizzly bear during a backcountry camping trip in Banff National Park said the two were long-time partners who loved each other and the outdoors.
Colin Inglis identified his nephew Doug Inglis, 62, and Jenny Gusse, 62, as the two backcountry campers killed deep in Banff National Park Friday. Their dog was also killed in the attack.
|
Quote:
In a media release issued Tuesday, Parks Canada said it conducted a necropsy on the bear, and found it to be a non-lactating older female estimated to be over 25 years old.
|
Quote:
The bear was shot and killed hours after the emergency response call was received, when Parks Canada staff arrived at the scene and the bear charged the response team.
Parks Canada said two cans of bear spray were found at the scene, and the couple's food had been hung appropriately.
|
Quote:
Bear attacks are rare occurrences. Fatal bear attacks are even less frequent. Over the last 10 years, there have been three recorded non-fatal, contact encounters with grizzly bears in Banff National Park. These incidents were the result of surprise encounters. This incident is the first grizzly bear-caused fatality recorded in Banff National Park in decades," Parks Canada said.
