Normally I think this a sound strategy, but I don't think Oesterle to be a whole lot better than Solovyov, and so the likely strategy will be to alternate those guys in and out of the #6 spot based on merit. I think Solovyov is ready for competition at this level, and he should absolutely get semi-regular playing time. That will go farther in his development than playing in the AHL. He needs to refine his NHL game, and that requires experience and playing time. He'll get it if he makes the team, he won't just be eating popcorn. Oesterle isn't a lock as an everyday player in the #6 spot.

They've both looked good, so far. It will be interesting to see how both of them do over the remaining preseason games as the opponents' rosters, presumably, get tougher.

Would like to see more Zary and Poirier. Team needs more skill, badly.

The beauty of having the AHL team in Calgary is that cuts dont really need to be made urgently and call up/down can be pretty streamlined. So for those not making the opening night roster, they could easily be in the next game and so forth. In terms of Wolf, this helps a lot with spot starts. He's clearly starting in the AHL so I would probably think to try and get him like 1-2 starts a month.

They'd better hammer this Jets team with an opening night roster.

Whether they do or don't - it really doesn't provide us any answers.
There are no conclusions that can be drawn from the preseason on a team level.

But if you keep him up, you have to waive Gilbert, and risk losing him (which they can't afford to do, in case they trade Hanifin).
Better to give Solovyov the 'Wolf' treatment, and keep him on the Wranglers, bringing him in periodically.

Is it safe to say Coronato is gonna make the team?

As of today, he's in. There is another week to go of course, but a job is his to lose at this point.

Not trying to be coy, but do you really believe Gilbert is a risk to be claimed on waivers at all? Especially with his injury and lack of playing time?

These guys are written in ink:
Huberdeau, Lindholm, Kadri, Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube, Coleman, Sharangovich
That leaves 4 spots. With Pelletier injured, you've got:
Duehr, Coronato, Ruzicka, Klapka, Hunt, Jones, Rooney (and everyone else is a huge longshot)
Four of those guys are in, and the only guy more certain, IMO, is Duehr

Mackey was claimed last year. Yes, it's a risk, and one that they can't really afford, IMO

Also, Solovyov is better playing with the Wranglers than munching popcorn. Let Gilbert sit, and bring Solovyov up and down. Much more sensible than risking Gilbert, no?

Klapka has been very quite since the pre season started.

I just want to see some line combinations being cemented so they build on some chemistry. How many times over the years with different coaches have we seen different combos right up until opening night? That's always bugged me. Leave some of these lines together for another game or two so it's not a mystery who's playing with who in Game 1.
That, and no injuries please.

Hoping to see some chemistry with the forward lines tonight. Haven't seen it yet on the Kadri and Lindholm lines and it's the biggest need out of pre-season IMO.

My bet would be they're not entirely happy with the Sharangovich experiment and are trying Mangiapane for that reason

Mackey was traded, he wasn't claimed off waivers
