You can’t have it both ways if you want this kind of environment IMO.

Caddies 100 percent should be barely seen and not heard. Full stop.

Well a little more research shows that the caddy may have walked on Rory’s line while celebrating. Doing that intentionally would be a dick move, though I can’t say if the caddy intended to be part of the story anymore than they usually are.

If nothing else it set things up to be far more interesting for what previously appeared to be a pretty boring Sunday. It also sets up a potential ugly crowd if the Americans do start to rally, could see it turning into a #### show (which would be lots of fun in all honesty).

Are we watching the same tournament? The caddies are celebrating along with the players. And of course they talk to the players, are we traveling back in time 100 years?

Indeed. I don’t know that this is good for Rory’s game, we’ll see. Cantlay played well being a target today but that’s going to be amped up tomorrow.

After Cantlay made the final putt, he pretended to tip a hat to the crowd. Other American players, caddies and team members waved their hats to European fans as well.
Joe LaCava, who caddies for Cantlay, waved his hat from the green. McIlroy was preparing to putt and asked LaCava to move out of his way. TV replays showed LaCava start to walk away, but then turn back and say something else to McIlroy.
LaCava had words with European players Shane Lowry and Justin Rose on the 18th green as well.

Caddies really should not be a part of things like this ever.

They should not be part of the story. Get the f out of the way, you haven’t done anything. The Ryder cup is becoming an embarrassing enough spectacle without the porters becoming part of it.

Imagine this leads to the PGA Tour's Attitude Era. Caddies taunting players, fans being way over the top, players doing DX "Suck It" to the crowd. Bring that #### on lol.

The porters 🤔. I get it if you don’t like the Ryder Cup type of environment. But to single out a caddy is wrong IMO. He is on the field of play with the player. Coaches celebrate in other sports.
The players can jump around and celebrate like idiots and you want the “porter” to just stand there quietly? Why?

I just saw a replay on the golf channel. Yeah that caddy looks like he was being a dick. It wasn’t that he stood in Rory’s line, he was just in his space while he was getting ready to putt. Instead of acknowledging it and moving off you can see he kind of hung around close to Rory. Seems like it is being blown out of proportion, but the caddy was certainly in the wrong.

I said it to be provocative. I think the difference is in other sports the coaches are not on the field of play until after the game or match is over, thus they don’t have an impact. Here the caddies are in the field of play and the outcome is still in the balance. I just think your job there is to gather up what needs to be gathered up, get out of the picture until the deciding moment has occurred.
I also didn’t love the video of him around the cars if it’s the same caddy. I don’t know what set Rory off ( and that wasn’t a good look) but it just seemed like he was pretty smugly strolling about after almost trolling for something to occur.
I think I must be getting old and grumpy. Pretty sure my wife and kids agree. Sigh. I love the format and concept of the Ryder cup, but hyper nationalism turns me off.

A war of words on the final green Saturday at the Ryder Cup spilled into the parking lot, where Rory McIlroy and caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay had to be separated before leaving Marco Simone.
Tensions flared late on the 18th green, where Patrick Cantlay, who had been razzed by fans for his decision not to wear a team hat this week, poured in a 43-footer for birdie. That prompted American players and caddies, including Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, to take off their hats and whirl them around their heads – a mock celebration of what fans had been doing to Cantlay around every tee and green.
LaCava continued to celebrate even as McIlroy lined up his putt to tie. Believing that it had carried on too long, and that LaCava was too close to McIlroy, McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, shouted at LaCava to back up. That led LaCava to dismissively wave off Diamond, sparking a few more words from the European side, including Shane Lowry.

LaCava is probably wrong being a caddy getting in the way of the players but if you are arguing with pricks like McIlroy and Lowry or the European team in general hard to find fault with that.
Although this US team isn't filled with likable guys themselves.

Yeah when you see the entire video of the green, the caddy looks like a jerk. Even yapping at Rory while he is reading his putt. And he did look smug in the parking lot. Supposedly the guy is not a dick IRL, but who knows. My guess is that Rory is pissed because there was no acknowledgement from him or maybe Cantlay that it was over the line.
And look, I hear you in the hyper nationalism front. I enjoy the Ryder Cup but it certainly feeds this kind of situation. You can’t expect players (or caddies) to be jeered for 9 straight hours and not expect some kind of occasional inappropriate reaction.

Yeah the fans are definitely part of the issue, it creates a pretty fuelled up situation.
Look I should give the caddy the benefit of the doubt a bit too, I find it hard to believe he was purposely doing that, he got caught up in the moment. That said, once you realize it, it’s probably time to just shuffle away.
