Govt looking to chop a billion from the defense budget

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/dep...lion-1.6981974

Quote:
Blair suggested to the defence committee that some of the savings could be attained by putting off planned equipment spending.
"We do know that we have to look very carefully at the expenditures," he said.
"It may actually require some of the investments that we know we have to make, [that] we may have to make over a longer period of time in response to the current fiscal situation."

This government is hilarious. In a time when our commitment to our armed forces and international security commitments are in questions, we're cutting a billion out of our defense budget.

Thankfully we spent almost a third of that amount redesigning our passport!

Because he (and a lot of other people) don't see his service with the Waffen SS as being problematic. This is a guy who said 2 years under Nazi occupation were the best years of his life.

I mean, Canada has multiple monuments for that Waffen SS division and the Deputy Prime Minister posted a picture of herself holding an UPA scarf (UPA was by most accounts far more guilty of atrocities than the Waffen SS 1st Galician was), so it wasn't necessarily a crazy assumption that people wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

The government is under significant pressure to meet their commitment of finding $15B in budget cuts.

If they need to find $15B then they need to hoist Freeland up by her ankles and shake her until it falls out of wherever she stashed it.

Yeah… who cares if you could easily fake a Canadian passport. That’s not something to be concerned about at all. Let’s equate these thing as if they are the same and come from the same budget.

If you think it was fiscally prudent to spend 284 million, almost double the approved budget, for a passport with better security features, and that the lions share of that funding went to those security features, then I have some land in Florida you might be interested in.

I’m curious. Do we know that Yaroslav Hunka was a Nazi? Did SS membership require Nazi membership? Most German soldiers were not Nazis (party members).

This country has become an embarrassment in the international community. It's partly our fault (voters) for allowing it to happen, one day we are going to feel the consequences of this. The Conservatives were not much better when they were in poser but this is one of the reasons I cannot bring myself to vote Liberal, our commitment to security and national defence has been on the decline for decades now.

What if defense just costs less these days due to various technological advancements?

Then our capabilities should be about the same as they were in the past. But they are not, they have declined significantly.

Fair enough. I'm not a deficit freak by any means, so I don't necessarily think they have to trim the budget, but it's clear that many in the country do. So, what would you have them cut instead?

Depends. Could allow the NDP and Bloc to regain the left flank and split the vote.

At least Carney is a smart guy and doesn't come with a lot of pre-existing political baggage. I don't hate this if true.
