For real.
His ppg average is 0.69.
I appreciate that he does a lot of other good things on the ice, but there's no way we need to pay 8 figures for ~60 points/season.
Anything over $8.5 is crazy.

No not Zary (on opening night anyways). Duehr isn't really young and even if he was he's gonna be penciled in on the 4th line... not really the spot that people who say they want to see youth are talking about.
Coronato for sure thou and I imagine that Ruzicka will get a longer leash this year and he's still young (but starting to run out of runway to establish himself as an everyday player thou he's gotta take it this year).

Wolf was always expected to be up and down.
Pelletier is a huge blow.
However, the rest of camp/preseason has been fantastic. We should see 4ish full time roles, that had formerly been filled by vets, filled by young players this season. Not only do guys like Ruzicka and Duehr continue to impress, but guys like Coronato and Zary look way ahead of where I'd hoped them to be.

Can anyone explain to me if an offer sheet for Trevor Zegras would make sense or not for the flames?
I guess the first thing that comes to mind is if the belief is that the team is going to finish near the bottom of the league for the next few years which could be some higher end picks?

Ducks could easily match any offer the Flames could come up with and Zegras is American and while money talks I can't see him playing in Canada by choice.

Flames do not have the cap space to make the deal first and foremost.
I am not sold on Zegras as a franchise player and to pry him away from the Ducks via offer sheet he would need to be overpaid significantly in the comp range of 4 1sts. Zegras is a stud and I would be fine giving him 8x9.5 if he was Flames property but I wouldn’t want to give him that contract and cough up 4 1st when this team is going to need that pipeline to continue to add future flames to the team.

I like when teams have something different in the 4th line. Not just replacement level players.
Like unreal speedy guys that aren't great at offense but can pressure on forecheck and get a O-zone faceoff.
Or heavy and lay some hits. Or Mike Eyssimont on TB...ridiculous stats darling and can skate.
Ruzicka doesn't bring much not already brought by the rest of the team and can't seem to do it regularly. Zary looks good but maybe a little more seasoning.
I would rather see Klapka (unique beast) or Pospisil (dirty and happy to get suspended) make the team.

Best 4th line in the last decade was the Martin - Cizikas - Clutterbuck line. Cizakas was probably better than a 4th liner but he was a great fit and a decent center who was responsible. The other 2 hit everything in sight and could skate. In the playoffs, they were as good as any 3rd line. They often scored big goals too but always brought energy, especially at home.
St Louis had a great 4th line when they won the cup and the were similar style
Vegas too.
Young players with upside usually aren't happy and play well in a 4th line role. Vet center that is responsible and wins face offs with 2 big fast physical wingers is IMO the best 4th line you can have.

IMO it's way, way too early to say anything about how these guys fair in the regular season which is another different level of play (like the playoffs are another level up from the regular season). We know that anyone can come up even during the regular season and look good for five-ten games. And then the grind starts setting in and consistency drops, this happens all the time with young guys. And now were are looking at couple of pre-season games, which is a really poor barometer given the quality of competition. That said, I'm pumped to see Coronato and hoping Wolf at least gets an extensive look.

The best 4th line the Flames have had in recent memory was Mangiapane-Ryan-Hathaway.
Pelletier - ??? - Duehr was the start of something similar, they just needed to find the right center.

Hathaway on our 4th line. Loved that. Or Lomberg (wish he stayed longer).
Something that the other 9 forwards don't bring is better than just filler or players who are similar but not as good as the other 9.

And technically our first round pick is tied up in a book of conditions with the Habs for dumping Monahan. So it would have to be $2,145,062 to $4,290,125.

I think that some people are missing the point that this is how negotiations go. There is no rush from Lindholm or his agent's POV to move or cave in to the Flames perspective. His agent's job is to extract maximum value for his client. He can stand at $10M for the whole season if he wants until 2 weeks prior to the trade deadline. I mean -- if the season goes well and the team's prospects look better --- there will be more incentive on the agent's part to lower the ask.
TLDR: it's just negotiations.

What? Nobody was struggling to understand how NHL negotiations go, lol. The worry is that he's in the last year of his contract and we will need to make a decision to trade him if he's willing to wait past the trade deadline, or even close to it, to be honest.
The responses you're seeing are because CP insiders have suggested they are close and that it would get done in the early stages of the new season. Not becuase we don't understand how negotiations work.

1. There is no worry. He will be traded unless Flames are first in the Pacific and if they are, Lindholm would have already signed an extension. This is a self-fulfilling loop.
2. To my knowledge, they are closer than is being reported out in the media. I think like Backlund got done, I believe Lindholm just needs to see how the season starts out. To be fair, if the Flames completely #### the bed in a month and he has signed an extension right now, it wouldn't really put him OR the team in the best situation.
3. To add to #2, it is currently not the early stages of the new season. I would be surprised if a) Flames are doing well and b) a deal is not done by christmas.

I don't disagree. I have been pleasantly surprised with what I've in the pre-season from many of the prospects. I don't get why anyone would be disappointed with the showings from the Flames top prospects.

Yeah the 10M ask is a pipe dream, but from Lindholm's agent perspective, are the Flames desperate enough to take it. No different when back in the day Kyperos said Gio was looking for 9M.

Flames don't have the draft picks to make an offer sheet, much less the cap space.
Even considering those impediments, it makes zero sense.
