Backlund wanted to leave 3 months ago. Conroy has made it clear that new management thinks it's important to have guys in Calgary that WANT to be in Calgary. Why attach the captaincy to a contract extension to seemingly appease a guy that didn't get the C right after Gio left, for whatever reason?
If he did not want to be here he would have left captain or no captain.

I would not be surprised that the AAV came in lower, because he is the captain.

Guy has been here his whole career, just signs a team friendly deal. He wants to be here.

This is a bad take, and I think you are misreading the situation. It is abundantly clear by now that Backlund's feelings about moving on in July were entirely connected to Sutter's coaching and the miserable season that most players experienced last year as a result. I am certain that all changed starting with the Award Ceremony, where the Flames made clear to Backlund exactly how much he means to the team and the city.

yeah. Big disappointment after what was supposed to be a good year, disappointment and shock so naturally players would feel that way, takes time to get over such a shockingly bad year.

Sutter.

Its that simple IMO.

Other things changed since seasons end as well, but DS clearly had lost the plot and exit interviews are nothing but raw/kneejerk reactions to a bad ending.

Francis predicted ahead of camp that Andersson would be named the next Captain of the Flames.

All hail Mikael Caplund. A true beast and leads the way on the hate for the no goods.

I'm not sure Francis was entirely wrong in maybe who Conroy/Huska wanted to be next captain, but it became very clear over the last week who the guys in the room felt the captain of this team should be.

Hard to name Andersson (or anybody else) captain when every guy on that team is saying Backlund is their captain in the media.

That's Conroy's burner account! He registered for an account here after being named co-captain, to read all the bad things we write about him.

Not that I gave it much thought but he definitely came to mind.
