Greaaaat

This is the kind of stuff that derails careers early on. For it to happen in an exhibition to a nobody sucks even more.

This has been one of my biggest concerns with Pelletier as a player. Last season, he was really starting to take a lot of punishment and seemed to be wearing down the more he played. He plays a bit of a reckless style, but he doesn't have the same shiftiness or sense to avoid taking punishment, which is important especially for a small player, nor does he have the weight or center of gravity to take it at the NHL level. I think if he is going to have a long NHL career, he needs to change how he plays a little.

Studenic got a 5 minute major...must've been something wrong. It's hardly Pelletier's fault for getting hit from behind 3 feet from the boards.

It absolutely is Pelletier's fault.

Go watch the hit. Studenic's reaction says it all.

He clearly didn’t mean too. But it was still reckless to be reaching like that at that proximity and angle to the boards. Combine that with a button hook attempt and we have a dangerous collision. Reckless play.

I don't see how any "deterrent" would have prevented what happened. I think Studenic made a rash decision in the moment, but the hit and the outcome was more unfortunate than malicious, and I very much doubt he would have done anything differently with Lucic glowering from the bench.

Studenic seemed obviously concerned about Pelletier right after. I don't think he expected Pelletier to suddenly slow down and change his body position like that, nor do I think he hit him overly hard. They were both going at high speed until Pelletier put on the brakes and turned. It's just physics at that point. It's a penalty for sure, but not one Studenic could have avoided taking.

Agreed, it was a bad fall not a bad hit. The calls on the night seamed tight as well, it was not the only boarding call

Is the consensus that he would have made the opening night roster?

I think the only way he wasn't on the opening night roster would have been that he had a brutal camp, and forced their hand. For him to lose a spot, he would have to have been beaten out by at least 4 of the following:

Coronato, Ruzicka, Duehr, Klapka, Hunt, Jones.

I could see Duehr, and maybe Coronato ahead of him. But if 2 others had passed him, that would be a pretty big failure on his part.

Ugghh....Pelletier and Kylington out already....

The silver lining is that the Flames have multiple rookies competing for those open spots, but this definitely hurts. Brutal.

He made his way onto Sutter's roster and that team had Toffoli, Lucic, Ritchie Lewis ahead of him on the depth chart so yeah. He'd probably be 9th on the depth chart right now. Conroy didn't sign any forward UFAs.

The hit. At first it looked like Studenic hitting Pelletier from behind. But after watching the second angle, Pelletier turns into Studenic's path and slows, as he does it, Studenic throws up his arm as a reaction. I'd also say Studenic still gives an extra shove, but yes, more heat of the moment.
