But Coronato played on an AHL line when he scored a hat trick.
They still sent the #1 pick and some solid prospects to Seattle with no one to play with.
Seems pretty similar.
Last year though Zary looked good but Pelletier did nothing with his ice time (which he's discussed this fall).
It's "in" to hammer on Sutter, but the biggest difference is Coronato getting it done.

Its a shot at Sutter and Treliving especially for last season for sure.
They had pre built the NHL squad and AHL squad and it was determined prior to camp that the AHL group would get some games and cut right away, Sutter pretty much said so.
It also goes back to pre Sutter and bringing up junk like Grossman who even got a contract and humiliated by Edmonton in game 1.
This is a lot different and feels different. Huska has even made the comment some players in camp show more in games as opposed to practice and its really hard for anyone to say someone had a bad camp when no one was allowed to watch camp outside preseason games.
Its a refreshing change.

I do think the commitment from Conroy not to have a slate of PTOs does make it more legitimate for prospects that there are spots available. I think that is more a change from Treliving than Sutter.

Ruzi and Coronato being given every opportunity to prove themselves and a big opportunity for Zary as well; here’s hoping Wolf bounces back too! Solovyov continues to be a prospect that I think will force managements hand at some point though I don’t think it will be for the start of the season. Easily the first callup at this point though.

Not much has changed though. Coronato has yet to play with NHL vets.
The Grossman contract is widely misunderstood. He took a contract for a specific amount of dollars to help the Flames gain more LTIR space later in the season.
But for sure Conroy has not littered camp with PTOs which is a nice change.
Just pointing out that deployment so far hasn't really changed.

So who do we think Pelletier's injury opens the door up to? Zary?

Might change as they get deeper into camp, but they do get to play on NHL rosters.
It does feel like they have a shot to make the team with how they performing but we will see.
Just saying its a refreshing change from the horror show of last year, and even the Gulutzan years didn't feel like a lot of joy or hope.

For sure ... he has Mangiapane and Ruzikca (lesser degree NHLer) tonight for example.
That's been my issue ... and not just with the Flames for the past three seasons. Young players don't get plugged in with established pros. Rosters are spit.
Not a huge change so far at this camp either.

Pelts is reminding me a ton of the first few years Backs had with the flames; still growing into his frame, some tough injuries and hard time cracking the full time lineup early on. It’s good lessons for Pelts even though they are hard ones to learn, he’s got a gamer attitude though very much like Backlunds and I think this will overall make a better more longterm player at the NHL level.

I think the PTOs and ensuring you have lots of depth for the bottom six and bottom pair was a Treliving thing more than a Sutter thing - though I doubt Sutter disagreed with the philosophy. It existed before Sutter returned. As the Flames pre-Sutter had terrible times starting the season on time (at least to my memory), he got the NHL squad together as closely as he could from the start of training camp. Players did break through though: Kylington, Ruzicka, and Klapka are examples of players who either made the team or got long looks during camp under Sutter.
I was a Treliving fan, but one of my dislikes was his overvaluation of veteran depth defencemen and bottom six forwards instead of letting those spots being covered by younger players. Always hated trading draft picks for players who would play 20 games at most for the team.
I was not sure about letting Sutter go despite some of the baffling coaching decisions last year, but he clearly lost the room given the statements from the players. I am cautiously optimistic about the new staff. Huska says all the right things and seems quite intelligent. I also like that they have prioritized the power play with the Savard hire. Seen a lot of smooth talking coaches fizzle though, so I will see when the real games start.

When I went to the Flames-Canucks game and saw his line I was not expecting much. That's for sure. And he took a couple gifts and converted. He looked like an NHLer.

So with Pelts out we can assume a bottom 6 spot has opened up for someone to step up and grab.
Forward lines now look like:
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Sharangovich
Mangiapane - Kadri - Dube
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
??? - Ruzicka - Duehr
To me Klapka has stood out in a good way since the prospect tournament in Penticton so he’s front of the pack. But I’ve also liked Hunt, Jones and Zary as well so I think this opens up some competition for the next few games between those 4.

I dont expect Honzek to make the big club, but I'd like to see him on a line with some more offensive minded linemates before the end of camp.
