Hopefully people wanting to go further south appreciate the single set of lights to go east on Bow to SB Sarcee, rather than the 7 lights, stop sign, playground zone and traffic circle (of mostly single lane roads) to go south on 85th to Springbank Blvd, or the 6 lights at mostly busy intersections to go east on Bow to 69th and south from there to the ring road

Is this going to be much faster than TCH to Sarcee and then down to Stoney?

I think a lot of people will take the new road out of novelty, but you're probably right... especially with the traffic that switches over to the WRR, the ol' TCH to Sarcee might end up being faster, though this traffic pattern (far NW to SW and beyond) may not be as significant as I'm imagining.

When the whole thing is open it won't be a contest. You could get to okotoks in the blink of an eye.
But with a limited opening, not sure there will be much difference between the old sarcee route and bow detouring through 69th..
Having 2 options should in theory lessen the volume each way though.

There is a light there now.
Edit: Way too late. Lots of action on this thread!

You mean Hwy 8? Opening this up 'early' would mean the whole thing is just open. Or do you mean just southbound or northbound?
They were working on putting up streetlights south of 17th on Saturday. I dont believe the EB 17th to SB Stoney ramp is paved yet, NB has had some paving.
No idea how much construction is left on the HWY 8 flyovers. That is probably the limiting factor and nothing south of 17th can open until they are 100%.

It's NB in the afternoon that will be the problem.

That 69th turnoff, which already sucks, could be real awful.

I avoid Bow/Sarcee at all costs, so I'm not familiar with when it sucks more and sucks less and which direction the suckage happens most in...
That said, where would those additional cars be coming from that 69th to Bow to the RR makes any sense?

I see two sets of light (85th and Old Banff/Strathcona Blvd) but that could be appealing nonetheless. I've never been on Bow Trail west of Sarcee, what is the speed limit here? But even at that I have a hard time believing this would be any faster to get from the deep SW to the NW than Sarcee>TCH is (and vice versa).

Regarding the lights, I may have misinterpreted the criteria as it was being discussed, but yes, you're right with the location of the lights.
I think the limit is 70, but traffic typically flows faster, especially between 69th and 85th (there is a pedestrian crossing light in the middle of that stretch too).
I guess I'm just curious about how much traffic will spill throughout the area when the partial opening occurs, or if most of the SW to NW traffic will stick to Sarcee > TCH...

Sight lines should hopefully be okay, but hopefully people don’t carry too much speed onto that exit ramp to find it more backed up than they expect. NB Crowchild to 17th was (maybe still is) really bad for that sort of thing

It’s just all the cars that currently back up on NB Sarcee.

Yeah the worst suckage is NB Sarcee in the PM rush, it can be 4-5 light cycles to get through there or more. As of next week you'll have a couple different ways you can go that may or not be faster but potentially far less irritating, and of course at full opening next year Stoney will be significantly faster.

Say I am driving home from downtown to Crowfoot in rush hour.
(1) take Crowchild
(2) alternative way that's becoming more popular over the past several years is to take Bow Trail West, then Sarcee North, then TCH West, and Stoney North.
(3) Now with the new opening of Stoney, a third way is Bow Trail West all the way to Stoney North
Both option 2 and 3 requires going through the fun Bow/Sarcee intersection, and for option 3, you have to go up the hill on Bow, and then go downhill on Stoney and going back up hill again..
