Flames are going to have to make some salary cuts to other positions then if Backs comes back at 5m. At least for Two seasons while the cap makes its leaps.

Backlund is making $5,350,000 now. If they sign him at 5, they don't have to cut anything; they just don't have as much money to spend on raises for other players.
Anyway, it seems pretty likely that some substantial cuts are coming on D. Hanifin is probably gone, and if he isn't, they'll have to cut Zadorov loose. Signing both does not appear to be in the cards. I don't see Tanev coming back at his current salary, either. That frees up several million for other purposes.
If and when Wolf pushes out one of the other goalies, that will also save money.

Except you have to replace 2 of the 3 dmen in your scenario. That’s going to cost money. Our pipeline on D isn’t very strong. I really like Morin but he is years away.

It will cost money, but it's in the cards anyway. At present, the only way I see to keep Zadorov is if Hanifin is traded – and a cheaper defenceman could very well be part of the return from that.
I'm not saying ‘Do this, so you can do that’; I'm saying ‘This is happening anyway, so it makes it more affordable to do that’.

How is this possible? That’s a 43% increase. I thought the cap could only go up 5% per year max.

Mikael Backlund is not a second line center on a team that expects to go anywhere near a Stanley Cup. For the love of God, he's behind Kadri on our depth chart and Kadri is barely a second line center anymore.
Here's a question for you... let's say we choose to re-sign Backlund and not Lindholm. How far do you think we're gonna go with Kadri at #1 and Backlund at #2?
Regardless of all that... my original point was that IN CALGARY, he's a third line center, and $5M on a #3C is a luxury reserved for teams that are perenial deep threats in the playoffs - not teams that are perenial threats to draft 16th overall.

When he is on I like Kadri a lot, he has that nasty part to his game that you need come playoff time. To bad his GAF meter drops to zero when things aren't going well.

I really think that perceived “GAF meter” issue is massively overblown around here.

Well that was everybody last season. It was a #### show, I don't think it is fair to come to conclusions about Kadri's game on that season.

You are syaing the cap is going up 42% in the next 4 seasons???
And 4 seasons from now would mean a 4 year deal.

Kadri made an interesting comment the other day. He said last season felt like a baseball season because of the long playoff run and short break. Maybe it wasn't his GAF meter, maybe he just ran out of gas after the all-star break. I can see why Kadri was less effective, and had a hard time manufacturing emotion. Especially when you combine that observation with the fact that the team was miserable, and no one was having a good time.
Right now I'm willing to give players the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what sort of team we have before jumping to conclusions.

Backlund would be second line centre on Colorado. He’s better than RyJo.

Really? Why?
Its one of the major issues this team has had for years. They sleep through periods until something wakes them up.
Showing up not ready to play, go down a couple and then 'turn it on.'
I think its definitely an issue and the only coach I've seen recently that really dealt with it, oddly enough, was Hartley.

And they won a Cup when their 2nd line C was making $4.5 and scoring at a 100 point pace.

I think many of us were of this opinion in the Captaincy Poll. If Backs is indeed staying, he's a shoo-in for the C.

I disagree. Backlund is a better two way player and he is definitely more durable but he is not as talented offensively as Johansen. I think Backlund going forward is going to regress offesuvely every year, he is a 3rd line C at this point.
