Backs will do the team a solid because he is all about winning so he will take a discount is my guess. 3 years $11M for a $3.67M cap hit with a full NMC and the captaincy.

That's your opinion that's he's 5 million plus. Not a fact.

Cool man…. Your response was all about the team not having space so I was clarifying that my original point, which you responded to, was just naming perceived value. Not what my expectations were for the cap structure of the team. You went on a tangent, I clarified. Relax.

You don't overpay 3rd line players that's how you screw up the cap structure of the team.
We finally ended the Troy Brower cycle with Lucic off the books.
We also have Lindholm to extend. Hanifin is a possibility now as well.
|
Backlund is not a third line player, and has not been for several years. Moreover, $5.0 m is probably the going rate for a quality third-line centre moving forward.

And that is fine, as long as that isn't here.

I’m against re-signing him but if signed that contract I would be quite happy. I don’t think there is a chance in hell he is signing for under $5 million per.

Backlund should be captain based on his authentic hatred of the Oilers and Canucks alone. Enough for me

Tre's extensions were always good. Don't know why he gets a bad rep for those. UFA deals were bad.

Backlund is a 3rd line centre on this team as currently constructed yes his worth is more.
The talk has always been if we could upgrade and centre and push him down the line up we would be a force up the middle and that's why we got Kadri.
But regardless of what # you assign his line I don't think many GMS are going to be handing out 4-5 year deals at 5 million plus for Backlund.
On 1-2 year deal sure.
If his intention is to cash in on a career year at age 34 I hope it's not here.

I might be too optimistic but I think Backlund is legit in his desire to win and taking less will be a way that will help the Flames accomplish their goal. I could be wrong and he wants all the money but if he was to go cup chasing I do not see teams offering him $5+M anyway.

If I were Conroy I would offer roughly $5M on a two year extension for Backlund. After that, it’s one year deals at low-ish value. <$2M

12m over 3 years I'd be fine with. Something like 5,4,3. Or just 4m/yr.

|
Which team is going to give Backlund that contract for longer than 1 year?
Kadri was on a 100P season pace, scored 87P in 71GP, and signed for $7M. Mostly because of age, and his career average being 56P.

Backlund is worth more than $5M right now, but we're talking about next season and beyond. A one or two year deal? Then yes, at least $5M. Longer? No way it's over $5, IMO.

I actually have heard some intel just now that hints at at 3 year deal with an AAV of 5M, a M-NTC, and the C. What I don't know is if that is coming from the Flames side or the Backlund camp yet. Personally I don't like it but it doesn't matter what I like.

I agree, one year too long for that money. 5m a year 4 seasons from now seems a little much.

GOAT!

Backlund is not worth 5M to the Flames. We are in no position to be running around spending 5M on a third-line center like we're on the cusp of winning a Cup or something.

I don’t like it one bit. $5 million 4 seasons from now is horrid.

How about spending 5M on a playing coach who has massively helped every rookie forward that ever was put on his line?
I'd actually say that's not a bad investment for a team looking to get younger.

People need to stop spouting this nonsense. Even if Backlund is playing on the "third line" in no world is he a "third line center." As of today, Mikael Backlund is a better-than-average second line centre, and regardless of where he shows up on a depth chart he will be paid as such. $5.0 m for three years seems abundantly fair.
