I bet this means there is an offer on the table with a deadline for Backlund which includes the C. If he declines it will be Andersson.

I think there are signs pointing to a Backlund extension and captaincy that will be announced. Pat has hinted at that as something he could see, Leslie was pretty confident some or all of Backlund, Lindholm, and Hanifin will extend. Frank’s training camp prediction for the Flames this morning was one of the UFA’s was signing.

I feel like if it was Rasmus, Huby, Weegar it would have been announced by now. I think a Backlund extension is moving in the direction of getting done

Hearing Backlund talk today, it kind of left me with the feeling that an extension might be in the works. When he was asked if he thought not having an extension might affect him not being named captain, it seemed like he wanted to say more than he did, but he just kind of lit up a bit and avoided the question.

I couldn't care less if Backlund stays, I would still name Andersson captain. I love that he's a trash-talking Edmonton hater.

I listened to that after my post and I think it is almost certainly happening after seeing his reaction. My thoughts are they have agreed but just ironing out the details.

Good news for me if true, but odd as well since I think he wanted to wait and see how the vibe is this year and it's only been 1 day of a no-stress situation...

Don't understand how OK just all of a sudden had issues. Major mess up not retaining valamaki. Looks even worse now.

I think being a good captain includes more than just pumping the team up for games. It also includes keeping people accountable, having difficult conversations with players, media, and coaches. It also involves figuring out team activities, getting guys together, etc.

IMO, the people in the room will make a much better decision in picking a captain than any off us, because they have all the information.

There isn't. At least not from what I have heard.

My guess...the management has picked Weegar and Andersson as the finalists and the players choose.

That's what I would do anyways. The captain needs to straddle the line between coaching and player - this gives you ownership from both on the selection.

Yeah, losing Valimaki has really set us back. He’s a force in the league. Perennial Norris candidate. The Finnish Bobby Orr - why god!?!?

I have my doubts that backlund is signing an extension any time soon. He has repeatedly said he will take his time and it’s about winning. No chance IMO he has come to the conclusion that on first day of camp this team is going to win.

For me it takes backlund out of the captaincy running. Don’t like the optics of , I’ll captain your team if you guys prove to me we are going to win . I have no problem on his approach of staying or going. It just takes him out of the captaincy running. Plus I think it will take a 3 year contract at over $5.5 million for him to re-sign. No thanks.

Friedman stated on 32 thoughts this morning that he thinks they are talking and moving towards and extension. Mentions the captaincy could be part of it. He doesn’t say it is imminent but there is something here to keep an eye on which is Friedman speak for it is only a matter of time

The cap doesn't work in Calgary's favor going forward if they bring Backlund back even at his current salary. Can't also bring back Lindholm, Hanifin, etc.

If I had to guess, signing Backlund signals the end of Lindholm here.

Sooo old.

But Backlund embodies so many great on and off-ice qualities and is still a very impactful player. If we have to have a team of geezers, I'm glad he's on it.
