Yikes .
Love Zadorov, but not at $5+.
Even $4+ is a stretch for him.
These are the kinds of contracts that get teams into trouble.

Yup and I think a team will give it to him like Gudbranson and I don’t want that team to be the Flames. Only way I want him back on the team is if he returns to his normal production and signs a reasonable contract

Generally the only players who give any kind of discount is star players signing massive contracts where there is some concern about leaving enough money for others.
Players like Zadorov should not be expected to give any meaningful discount as this is likely his biggest payday.
And even if he is wanting badly to stay in Calgary, if he takes what Calgary considers a fair contract, even if it is less that what another team would pay him, I don't consider that really a discount.
A discount is less money than he could really make in the location of his choosing.

I mean, in a world in which Gudbranson makes 4m, I'd also ask for 5+ if I'm Zadorov. But that's not going to work, obviously.
Really like the guy, but like Toffoli, it's felt like a "overperformed, so sell high" situation to me.

Stamkos should really have a look at TB’s cap. I’m sure they will make him an offer, but they have to move money. They are paying 3 guys $9.5, plus others at 8.5, 7.875, 6.5 and 6.25. That Nick Paul signing is hurting them.

I think a contract that starts with a 4 is fair for Zadorov.
The cap is tight now, but it is going up.
If you ranked players high to low based on contracts the 4 million range is 61 to 90
Zadorov currently makes 96th most among D men.
Zadorov is a reliable D man, and he is a big body. If the Flames are getting younger, as they should, they still need a big body or two to keep things in line. More than that, you need a big guy to compliment the skilled D the flames have been targeting.

Do a Find/Replace for "Stamkos" with "Lindholm" and the Lightning with the Flames and Conroy could publish a statement by noon.

The Lightning are in a bit of an unusual spot. They have a franchise vet, who likely wants a great payout, but they are also a highly competitive team. Usually, the team winds down with the franchise vet, and the team costs out a few more seasons, rewarding the now past his prime vet.
It wasn't really the Stamkos era that got the Lightning their cups either. He only played 1 game in their first cup run.
The Lightning need to make a tough choice. If Stamkos wants to stay around, i has to be at a discount and not at a retirement rate.

But then I again bring up the sheltered minutes that Zadorov plays. He was being played in a way to maximize his hitting and offence, while minimizing defensive deficiencies. But now needs to be paid as someone who is isn't having defensive deficiencies hidden and sheltered.
We need to stay away from a $4.5-$5.5AAV Zadorov. If we were smart he'd be the best candidate to get a kings ransom at the deadline for and help restock the cupboards to focus on drafting and developing even when not rebuilding, as Conroy stated he'd be doing.

It will certainly not be a long term deal. Medium at best. But he's going to want a number starting with 9, I bet. He's not in the Thornton time of his career yet. 34 goals and 84 points last year. However, he's a generation away from most of the other core guys - Point, Kucherov, Vasilevsky, Hagel and Segachev. Really only Hedman is close in age.

Stamkos has a history of negotiating hard. I think his last contract was signed just a day before unrestricted free agency. His contract before when he was an RFA, was signed later in the summer as well and I recall there being news about it being a hard negotiation.

The Lightning need to move on if Stamkos is looking for a long-term deal that is $9+ million. That's huge money for a 33 year old. Point had 51 goals and 95 points, so that makes Stamkos the second best centre on the team.

Why would the Leafs want Vladar? They already have cap issues, and unless Woll craps the bed, he's the backup. If he does, they have Martin Jones.

I think the Leafs are fine going with Samsonov, Woll, and Jones as their top 3 goalies.
According to Capfriendly, even with Murray and Muzzin on LTIR, they would still need to dump almost $3 million to get in under the cap when the season starts.

I would be very happy with a 4.5 AAV Zadorov.
