It sounds like they are just worried about alienating India because they see them as a counterweight to China's power.
I think there needs to be more discussion about the issue of allowing a separatist movement in another nation to be organized and partially funded in Canada though. If Quebec separatists had organizations in a foreign country and were organizing referendums and displays of disobedience in Canada, I think we'd have pretty big issues with that. Or maybe the guy really was just a plumber... what's the truth here?
This doesn't excuse India for assassinating a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil of course. Under no circumstances can Canada let that slide.

I’m not so sure I would be praising Trudeau’s “timely” response of foreign interference by India, since he knew about it years ago.
Unfortunately Trudeau declined to take action, and now here we are.

Part of the issue is that they had their own "country" back in the day before the Brits did their usual thing and ####ed up all the lines on the map(amongst other things). I actually found this Wikipedia article a good summary of what is going on and how they got here. Worth a read.

Trudeau absolutely needed to say something to Modi given the intelligence he pretty obviously had from Canadian Intelligence Services. But I think there was a smarter way to handle this on his part, especially after asking the Five Eyes to stand united on this and getting denied by the US and UK at least, based on what's been leaked. When he found out he wasn't getting any support from the big hitters on the international stage, I think he'd be better served to have private discussions with Modi about the incident and settling it behind closed doors vs. calling India out alone like this in the media. India is going to be a power at some point and the reason why smart people from the US and UK opted to defer when asked. Just my opinion...

From what I had heard on the radio, Trudeau did have a private conversation first, which was perhaps the source of much of the opinion pieces about how Trudeau got snubbed. It was because Trudeau confronted Modi.
And I'm not sure allies are as far off as that Sun re-post of the Washington Post article was. The headline makes it seem far worse than anything in the article. I suspect allies wanted to see how it plays out initially, while still lending the words of support they did. Does this sound like not "getting any support"? To me it sounds like allies standing with us.
Quote:
After the announcement in Parliament, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters that Trudeau had raised the allegations with President Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and that they would be a topic of discussion at the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week.
Washington described itself as “deeply concerned” about the allegations and said it was critical that “Canada’s investigation proceed and the perpetrators be brought to justice,” according to a statement by White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said her country had raised the issue with India at “senior levels” and expressed her “deep concern,” according to a spokesman.

Sigh. OK, and now cue posters accusing me of be a Liberal patsy defending Trudeau no matter what...

Okay, I haven't heard this. Better if he in fact tried to deal with this quietly first.

Tinfoil hat moment, but it kind of makes me wonder about the circumstances of his plane being grounded in India around that same time.

What would have been actually better than that is is Trudeau dealt with it when he found out. But, instead, he didn’t want this information to interfere with his Mr Dressup trip.

Yeah, the British never should have done that thing they did in India and most other places they controlled before WW2.
The article says that Sikh's were not a majority anywhere in the region before partition in 1947 and were resistant to create a religion based state, which does kind of make sense. They are apparently the majority now though. It's also a reminder that the largest act of international terrorism home cooked in Canada has its roots based in this conflict.
I have no skin in this one, but I would prefer Canada doesn't become a base for movements like this.

Hahaha wait. Let me get this straight: Trudeau should have dealt with information that implicated India’s government in the murder of someone in June 2023… before his trip in 2019, and before India had even declared Hardeep a “terrorist”?
Perfect. No notes.

It looks like Trudeau was pretty good buddies with Modi back in the day:

Trudeau knew about India’s interference in Canada before his 2019 trip. But chose not to act on it.
Quote:
Regarding CSIS’s plan to take down India’s clandestine networks, NSICOP says at a May 2017 meeting, CSIS director David Vigneault met with Trudeau’s then national security advisor, Daniel Jean, and the deputy minister for Public Safety, and the Global Affairs director of counter-terrorism, crime and intelligence.
In the meeting, Jean raised questions about whether Trudeau administration plans to change the CSIS Act, would impact CSIS’s use of threat reduction operations, the NSICOP report says.
And so, the report says: “In a later briefing note to the Prime Minister on the Threat Reduction Measure, the national security and intelligence advisor stated, ‘In view of the significant political sensitivity, the Privy Council Office advised CSIS to be mindful of this context and take a limited approach to briefings and interviews.”
This briefing note for Trudeau, from Jean, added that “CSIS had developed a more ambitious [plan to disrupt Indian intelligence networks] but scaled down its intervention on advice from Privy Council Office and Public Safety.”
As a result of other departments telling CSIS to stand down, NSICOP says that CSIS “met with a smaller number of individuals from Mr. Jain’s network, but did not, as originally planned, engage elected officials or journalists.”
Perhaps more shockingly — in light of CSIS’s original plans to disrupt the growing Indian intelligence networks targeting Sikh communities in Vancouver — after these meetings in Ottawa, CSIS did nothing to target the Vancouver diplomat, “Mr. Singh or his network.”
In addition, in CSIS’s original threat reduction plan, Global Affairs Canada “had committed to inform senior Indian diplomats in Canada of Mr. Singh’s activities,” NSICOP says.
But later, for political reasons, Global Affairs was mute on CSIS’s concerns in Vancouver.
“For its part, Global Affairs did not raise Mr. Singh’s activities to senior Indian diplomats,” the NSICOP document says, “because it had concerns that preparations for the Prime Minister’s trip to India were reaching a critical point and may be negatively affected by such an intervention.”
In the aftermath, the alleged Indian intelligence networks interfering in Vancouver’s diaspora were untouched.
Citing an October 2017 internal CSIS briefing note, NSICOP’s report says “CSIS noted that Mr. Singh ‘continues his [foreign interference] activities unabated.’”

Had Trudeau dealt with this when he found out, India might not have been able to use their “network” to have this man killed.

Dealt with… what? Read what he was briefed on in the meeting again.
And then read what the actual information was.
And then read how the decision was made for CSIS to proceed as they did.
