Nucks trade Tanner Pearson + 3rd to MTL for Casey DeSmith
https://twitter.com/user/status/1704250013147160721
Canucks clearing cap. Second time Rutherford has traded Pearson for very little return.

Vancouver clears $1.45M for a 3rd round pick. Seems fair.

First trade in ages and insiders were nowhere on this one.
I hope there are more under the surface.

I don't mind it both ways. When it was said the Canucks traded Pearson, first thought was how much did they have to pay to get rid of him. To trade a 3rd and get DeSmith as a backup is an ok move for the Canucks.
Good for Montreal, Pearson with 50% retained likely gets them another picks, and he likely gets ice with them this year which could help him have an ok year.

Not enough return for a 2nd liner with a very reasonable $3.25M cap hit. Lol at the Canucks hating to keep draft picks. New Jim is old Jim.

The Canucks are terrible at asset management; but Pearson is coming off a bad injury (that they apparently mismanaged) and they were up tight against the cap.

The Canucks shutting down their online forum yesterday in anticipation of this blockbuster makes more sense now.

Tanner Pearson was a trending down player coming off a serious injury to his hand. I wish him the best of luck, but this trade makes the team better and saves their bacon all while costing a 3rd rounder.

His statement is still true. The contract was stupid the moment they signed it, especially given where they were - they should have traded him at that deadline.
This is also the second season in a row they've had to deal a pick to get out from under a bad contract to a bottom 6 guy to get under the cap ceiling. This one isn't as bad as Dickinson but it's still a bad sign when you have to give away draft picks to get cap compliant every year.

It's also dumb because the fact is they did clear cap space. Why they needed to is a different matter. To achieve their goals, the trade looks good.

Taj is right - they needed to dump a player (again!) to clear cap space.
Also, yes, they needed a backup goalie, which only reinforces Taj's point that this is merely cleaning up their own mess - they were in cap jail, AND they still needed a backup goalie!
Hard to spin this as anything other than wiping their own ass.
