This was unsurprisingly disappointing. I went in with low expectations, and they were not exceeded. It fell victim to typical sequel-itis, wherein more is not better. There was a good movie in there somewhere for sure - it wasn't awful or bad. Just disappointing.
My two cents.

I dug S#. I thought it was very entertaining, the villains were cool and sure, there were some sappy parts and some scnes that dragged, but I ain't gonna hate a movie because of a couple weaker scenes. Also, I aint a comic book nerd so if something isn't true to the comic book, I could really care less.

I was under the impression that the X-Men director has also left the floor open for someone else to come in for a Fourth movie, similar to the Spiderman series. A popular comic reel site I read has mentioned a fourth X-Men movie multiple times.

After watching that I can understand why both the director and Toby want nothing to do with this series anymore.

Four different friends of mine went and saw it this weekend, all seperately, and they all agreed it was utter crap. All four said it was just a terrible movie.

IIRC, the director of the first two was Brian Singer, who ditched the project in favour of Superman: Returns. Brett Ratner directed the third.
Having said that, I hope they don't get into Mission Impossible or Batman territory with either the Spidey or X-Men franchises. I don't want a different director each movie.
If Sam Raimi had a distaste for Venom, he shouldn't have been in the movie. Venom should be bankable, and could be a spinoff character if handled correctly.
If it was anyone it was Raimi who dropped the ball on this one IMO. Having said that, I would rather Sony end the franchise on 3, which they won't cause they're money hungry, than to see someone else try and take over for Raimi. There's a style that he brings that would be hard to emulate. There's enough feedback from this one for him to know what his fan base is, which I'm surprised he didn't know to start.
One other quick point, but as a slight comic book nerd when it comes to Venom, didn't the Symbiote have healing powers? I recall Brock putting the Symbiote on a female companion that had been mugged pretty badly. I'm thinking that may be one way to get Venom back into the storyline, but (*SPOILER ALERT* Hilight to see) while the symbiote was in the cage Spidey made, and after Brock jumped back in, I thought I saw a rib cage within the explosion. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what I saw.

You're right Prottotype.. you saw that correctly. And that's why I'm so furious about the Venom part. Just.. how could they do that to such a major character?

I still mostly enjoyed the movie because of my love for the character, but I honestly think that it was still a pretty poorly done film for the directorial problems already mentioned.
I was disappointed.

I personally don't get all the love for S2 - the whole first half was all moping and doping about how unfair being Spiderman was and how he couldn't ever have a normal life. Granted Doc Oc was cool and Alfred Molina made an excellent villain but the whole movie didn't get moving till it was almost 2/3 done when they fought on the train (which was the only reason I liked S2 at all).
S3 was decent - at least they balanced out the emotional crap with some action. There may have been too many villains - one could have been cut out *cough*Sandman*cough* but (*SPOILER ALERT* Hilight to see)then there wouldn't have been the need for Harry and Spidey to team up in the end then to save MJ.
And Venom definitely deserved more time on screen - when the symbiote took over Eddie it was awesome and the effects were well done (*SPOILER ALERT* Hilight to see) unlike the poor CGI work at the end when the Sandman drifts off. Altho I was a little confused with why the symbiote made Peter all emo, gave him a bad haircut and the need to thrust his pelvis at random women on the street while Eddie got vampire fangs.......
I think S3 was perhaps my second favourite movie of the 3 with #1 still being the best.

My bad - thought that had been mentioned already in the thread, must have been another board that I read where it was being discussed. I've amended my post - thanks for pointing it out.

While I agree with most points made about this movie, I think most are over analysing it a tad. It was only meant to be a superhero movie, people go to see them to see good guys flying around and beating up bad guys. Trying to devlop some the villians in this movie would easily have added another 1.5 hrs to an already longer than average movie.
My only real beef with the entire series is this.....How can there be ANY mystery as to the secret identity of Spiderman? In the first movie, an entire cafeteria saw him walking out with a serving tray attached to him by a rather long spiderweb, shorty after that he fires a guy twice his size down a hallway into a locker after flipping around like a ninja during the "fight". In the second movie, about 30 blocks of New York and an entire subway car saw him without his mask on and in this one, Brock saw him with no mask, the scene were he was going to recieve the key to the city, he briefly stood ontop of a buidling in front of a massive crowd with no mask on and it seemed to me he spent half the movie without his face covered up. Dunno, just seems as though out of all the superheroes, he seems to be the least concerned with protecting his secret identity.
BTW-What is this emo reffernce about?
