The funding for infrastructure would be cut to be clear. One Cochrane built more houses and created a larger infrastructure gap but had houses with no supportive infrastructure then the infrastructure money would start up again.

Yes, exactly the problem. There is already a very noticeable gap. I'm not sure why anyone would build a house, if it got to the point where that house wouldn't have access, power, water, school for their kids ect. for a number of years, as funding is restored.
Towns needing to slow down and build infrastructure would just be cratered by the policy.

Again, it's not the best policy. I much prefer the BC NDP's approach. However, it's better than the LPC's approach of nothing.

Well the GST cut that the government just announced will build 230,000 new rental units according to TD Bank. The London announcement through the Housing Accelerator program was for 2,000 new units at a 74 million dollar investment. Theoretically if all other applications to that 4 billion dollar fund have a 37K per unit cost that would be over a million affordable units (seems high but that is what the math is). So not sure I would say they are doing nothing, that is what PP would say.

Sorry the Feds announcing 2000 units over 3 years is effectively nothing on a national front. Airdrie announcing that would be a bigger deal.

$74M is not the cost of 2000 housing units though so $37K is not a representative cost.

Funds might be used to increase sewer and water capacity in areas where servicing is limiting intensification.
Morgan also suggested it could incentivize the conversion of some downtown office space into residential units.
To keep pace, city staff will use funding to improve processes in the planning and building departments.
“We very much have to think differently, get some consultants, maybe hire some temporary staff to get this work done, but we are very motivated,” said Scott Mathers, deputy city manager of Planning and Economic Development.
“The program was designed to reward municipalities that are going to pursue affordability in the creation of new housing supply, and we recognize we can’t just create lightly affordable housing, we also have to build supportive housing,” added Morgan.
Currently, 2,000 Londoners are experiencing homelessness, including 600 with complex needs.
The mayor expects some of the funding to support the council-endorsed Whole of Community Response to Homelessness that aims to create up to 15 low barrier service hubs and 600 supportive housing units.
“[The funding] can support the creation of transitional beds in the hubs, so we can use some capital dollars for that, we can also use it for the wrap-around supportive housing,” said Morgan.

Atlantic Liberal MPs have been speaking out the media about their party abandoning their base.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/lib...-out-1.6966939
Quote:
Atlantic Liberal MPs say they want an additional rural carve-out on the carbon tax to ease cost-of-living pressures specific to Canadians living outside of major urban centres.
MP Ken McDonald, who represents the riding of Avalon in Newfoundland and Labrador, said many of his constituents feel abandoned by the federal government.
He brought their concerns to the attention of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the national Liberal caucus meetings this week in London, Ont.
"I told him exactly as it is," McDonald said. "We're punishing the rural areas of our country and the most vulnerable people in our society."
McDonald is pushing for a special policy for rural Canadians that would include carbon tax rebates higher than those the backstop program currently offers.
|
Atlantic Canada has been taken for granted by Trudeau as a region that has traditionally been a Liberal stronghold for decades, but Atlantic Canada being predominantly more poor is hit harder by punishing taxes. The carbon tax hikes has been particularly unforgiving and punishing to rural communities, and the federal government claiming it's putting money into Nova Scotian pockets while simultaneously raising taxes so visibly is quite the bold move, and quite unpopular.
https://www.canada.ca/en/environment...g-rebates.html
Quote:
“Canadians are concerned about the cost of living and about climate change. They are concerned about the impacts of extreme weather events on our communities, our health, and our economy. That is why we have created a pollution pricing system that helps with both. Pollution pricing is the most efficient, effective, and affordable way to lower our emissions and fight climate change. For Atlantic Canadians, the federal price on pollution will put more money back in the pockets of most families, while helping to protect our environment at the same time.”
– The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change
|
This federal government claim does not match the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board's findings.
https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/rebate-d...-tax-1.6460201
The reality however, even if Liberal math claims are true and Nova Scotians are paying less (or even making a profit), is people see what they see at the pumps, and on their energy bills (Nova Scotia still has 50% of it's electricity produced by coal and natural gas heating is quite rate in Nova Scotia). Halifax regular gas pricing is currently 190.3 cpl. 18.05 cpl of that amount is directly attributable to the new taxes and adjustments. The optics are just not good, and people vote on optics and impressions.
Liberal MPs in Atlantic regions understand that they are falling far behind the Conservatives building an 11 point lead in Atlantic provinces and many are likely to lose their seat come 2025 without drastic changes. It remains to be seen if Trudeau will act to his Liberal MP's calls for help.

A month after Global Affairs Canada told CBC News it was looking into claims that the Polish government asked one of its diplomats in Canada to gather information on a former Alberta cabinet minister, the dismissed consul general at the centre of the affair says he still hasn't heard from the department on the matter.
Andrzej Mańkowski told CBC News the only official he has heard from is a B.C. bureaucrat who asked him to return his diplomatic licence plates and identification.
"[Officials with Global Affairs] haven't tried talking to me," he said.
Mańkowski alleges he was dismissed from his post in late July after he refused to carry out orders from the Polish government to gather information about Thomas Lukaszuk, a former deputy premier of Alberta who often provides commentary to CBC News about the province's politics.
Poland's Ambassador to Canada Witold Dzielski called the allegation "totally absurd."
"The idea of Polish diplomacy spying on a former provincial politician ... it's really out of this world," Dzielski said.
He said he has never met Lukaszuk and did not know of his previous career in politics before Lukaszuk emailed him about an unrelated consular matter long before the reports about Mańkowski came out.
Dzielski said that if the notes cited by Lukaszuk are real, they were leaked illegally because they would constitute private diplomatic communications.

If we get to a point that government is enacting good ideas, even if they came from the opposition, we're in a much better place.

It’s funny because the opinion piece takes a pretty big leap, even calling it a complete copy of Conservative policy, when, at most, the only compatible is that funding was discussed in relation to the approval of a Calgary housing strategy.
And of course, the takeaway from people is not just that it’s a complete copy despite the only similarity being dangling funding, but that what conservative supporters thought was a good policy because it came from Conservatives, is now bad because the Liberals are doing it.
Hilarious.

Liberals are a sinking ship.
“ There’s nothing novel about the Liberals defending a policy position like the Soviets defended Stalingrad, then abandoning it overnight in favour of the opposite position — and then immediately attacking anyone so stupid or ignorant as to still support the previous policy.”

I'm theory, bringing new ideas forward to improve proposed legislation is what the opposition is supposed to do all the time. It's weird that some people consider this a problem

Pretty serious allegation against India just came out
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/tru...jjar-1.6970498
Quote:
"Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar," Trudeau said Monday.
"Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty. It is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open, and democratic societies conduct themselves," Trudeau said.
"As you would expect, we have been working closely and coordinating with our allies on this very serious matter."
|
This is interference on a whole other level, if true, with serious repercussions.
