Blue Jackets' Associate Coach Pascal Vincent will probably have to run training camp while there's an "ongoing investigation." He's a former head coach of the Manitoba Moose.
Who knows how it plays out once the season starts.

If nobody on the team reported anything amiss and the guys talking about it are just bitter losers that don’t have any inside knowledge then seriously, why would they bother?
Are they going to investigate any time anyone mentions any rumour about any coach whether or not they have any inside knowledge?
|
There are several possible reasons:
- firing an email to the players saying "let me know if you want to stand out in a crowd and possibly put a target on your back by putting your concerns down in electronic ink" - isn't a great way to conduct any investigation
- Walsh is new on the job and probably wants to meet as many players as possible over the next year or so...why not bump the CBJ trip up on the schedule. And he'd certainly want to demonstrate to his membership that he will take things seriously
- Similar to above, it could be a signal to the NHL that the PA isn't going to sit idly on seemingly minor issues. And that they want to drill down on player's rights on things like this that have never previously been considered
Could it all happen over the phone? Perhaps, but it's probably faster to just fly over than play telephone tag with a dozen guys.

Or Mike Babcock continues to be a terrible human doesn't deserve to earn a multimillionaire salary bullying young people.

I was totally shocked a supposed nice guy like John Davidson would go down this route to hire Babcock. Shows how much each team is dying to win at any cost.
I truly believe most people deserve a second chance. Even third chances for stupid things they've done. However, sociopaths fake their apologies, and just don't care and those people never change. There are a ton out there, and those people don't deserve any benefit of the doubt. I know hockey and sports is different than our regular 9-5's, but even in more civilized environments like many of us work, if I'm talking to someone and they say they're married with 2 kids, I don't care to ask to see family pics because...I don't care. It's weird, and I just don't care to see pics of someone's family. How does anyone ask even in conversation, to see someone's family pictures? It's just so odd. Given this guy's history it should be looked at skeptically. I frankly hope he's pushed out because at this point there are enough stories to know his true colours and the likelihood he's a sociopath. Davidson should be held accountable too for sticking his neck out for a dbag.

I'm a believer that coaches are overrated when it comes to success and don't understand why teams court someone with baggage when plenty of other qualified candidates are available.

I can also see why the younger players have apprehensions about being put on the spot with pics. I knew someone years ago who played with the Leafs during the lockout and supposedly some coaches don’t like to see players partying or even drinks in hand publicly. Those are the tame stuff in pics. Anyway, Babcock is an idiot. Players won’t stand by him given his reputation, there’s no league to stand by him given his past, and the team won’t want to risk losing their young players to walk around egg shells, so I imagine there’s a point where he walks away or is forced out in the next week.

Sure, that's probably true, regardless of this situation. But that doesn't mean this was some diabolical plot. Hopefully there are more twists and turns to come with this story, but I suspect it lands somewhere in the vicinity of "what's his number" in terms of a poor judgment move.

I continue to think this was Babcock awkwardly trying something some book said could connect him to the players “ask about their families” and in typical Babcockian fashion he made it into some sort of mandate.

Man. I can totally see some life coach somewhere who told him to connect with people by identifying with their families. And then he's like, "hand over your phones for photos right now!"
I must be way more boring than the average NHLer though...if I showed the photos on my phone to someone they'd 100% just get bored of seeing photos of my kids playing soccer, and on the first day of school, and on summer vacation, etc.

My thoughts too. I keep thinking about that scene in Imitation Game where Allan Turing gives everyone apples.

As I said in the post the backlash they have got from handling things so badly in the past.

The thing about ‘chances’ is they aren’t infinite. In the NHL there are only 32 head coaching ‘chances’ at a time. If you give a piece of garbage like Babcock a second chance, someone else is missing out on a first chance.
