That's his usual move. Always lean negative. If he's right, he can play the "told you so" card and pretend like he's the sober voice of reason instead of a blind homer, and if he's wrong, who cares.

I see Lindholm re-signed, once the year starts and both sides get a better idea of what he actually brings. The gap there is that Lindholm's cap views Lindholm as a 40 goal PPG 1st line 2 way center, but last year's numbers don't jive with that.

If the choice is making a better playoff run and trading Backlund/Hanifin for a pair of late 1sts/2nd round picks, then the team is choosing playoff run. You let Backlund test the UFA market, and realize that no one is offering a 4 year deal. Hanifin you try and work a reasonable deal with.
Based on what Backlund has had to say, including his availability yesterday, he’s looking for a place where he can win. Doubt he thinks that is going to come with a four year deal.

I think there was multiple insiders who said it. And that although he was leaning towards going back to the US he would do whatever he could to help the team win as long as he was still a Flame.

I can't see Backlund signing a 1 year deal on contender. Who knows though. Maybe from his perspective, he's made his money and wants to go for a cup before going back home.

I don’t think he would sign a one year deal either, or at least it wouldn’t be his first choice, but I could certainly see a two year deal.

I know it rarely happens but it could be that he gets moved to a contender this year, likely close to the deadline, and resigns here in the offseason. He did call Calgary ‘home’ in his availability yesterday…..especially if he goes somewhere and wins a cup.

(Highly unlikely dream scenario, I know)

Makes complete sense for Lindholm if he’s fine being here. Way too much risk for return in not re-upping for the rumoured 8x9ish.

Let the guys who want to win move on and sign the rest to longterm deals.

Everybody wants to win. If you mean let the guys go who don't think they can win in Calgary then yeah I agree. I wouldn't want them on the team.

I meant the guys who want to win in the next couple years. Like when we traded Iginla because he wanted to win. The guys that don’t expect to win in the next couple years we can sign to longterm contracts. I would agree that everyone wants to win but sometimes you know it just can’t happen for a franchise at a certain time.

Just because you don't think the team has any chance of winning in the next couple of years doesn't mean the players themselves do.

The Flames traded Iggy and tried to trade Kipper because they were at the start of a rebuild. As much as some people on here want them to be they're not there yet. They might end up deciding to if things go sideways again this season but right now they think they can still win.

Conroy...please No....

I know Lindholm is a nice guy and all, but please, please trade him!

Otherwise this team is going to need to be absolutely certain that their new Arena is 'Wheelchair Accessible."

The Saddledome was the Library, the new rink will be the Retirement Home

Yea, this is going to be a mistake. This feels like the Kadri trade. Just doesn’t feel right.

The Kadri trade that never happened where we would've had him through his prime for cheaper along with Brown and would be presently rid of the contract?

Presumably the Monahan trade which is also the Kadri trade, no matter how pedantic some people want to be

Lindholm is the best centre the team has had since Nieuwendyk.

If they trade him, they have to replace him. Anyone they replace him with is likely to be more expensive and not as good.

More importantly, Lindholm is currently the longest-tenured Flames forward after Backlund - collecting talent is part of the equation, but it doesn’t work if the guys in the room don’t live and die for each other.

That’s why it so rarely works out for the Flames, and why it’s important to draft and develop a core that’s roughly the same age and has 8-10 years to figure things out.

Because you don’t fall on a grenade for a mercenary, and this sport is full of grenades.

Well to be fair that's because Johnny flip flopped.

He was going to stay.
Until he changed his mind in the final moments.
