A lot of advanced stats pundits do. Their models can’t capture the projectability of players to a bigger, faster, more physical league. There’s a reason many smaller players who light up junior and lower leagues can’t do the same in the NHL. European leagues are full of them.

At 16th, you don’t expect to be a top line player
It’s an exception not a norm. Look it up

I think some of the small player bias also comes from the fact that smaller players are more likely to be a steal than a big guy. NHL teams still drafts for size and any player that is bigger and is scoring at a high pace will be gone quick.

No, but you can and should hope for one.
Look at 2015 for an example:
#16 - Matthew Barzal
#18 - Thomas Chabot
#20 - Joel Eriksson Ek
#22 - Iyla Samsonov
#23 - Brock Boeser
#24 - Travis Konecny
If you're drafting for a 2nd line forward, you're basically breaking even at best.

But this draft should be compared to 2003 and 2015 more than the others since it's not your average draft either.
At 16th OA
2015: NYI selected Matthew Barzal
2003: SJS selected Steve Bernier
Other picks in that range (14-18th) in those drafts were also:
-Jake Debrusk
-Zachary Senyshyn
-Kyle Connor
-Thomas Chabot
-Brent Seabrook
-Robert Nilsson
-Zach Parise
-Eric Fehr
That's a REALLY good batting average for not only nhlers, but fairly prominent ones.

The Flames think they are drafting a guy with top line potential though

Now I wonder if all those guys were projected as 1st line guys or not?

#22 definitely was projected as a 1st line centre.

Noah Hanifin says the door is “absolutely” still open to extend with Calgary.
Says he wants to see and evaluate how things go this season. #Flames

Im sure someone will come along and say he is too old to extend....something something.
I would welcome him being a Flame for a while longer. Just a really good all around defender.

I'd give him an 8 year deal today if he'd do it.

No way Noah is going to say in the city of Calgary he was hoping for a trade and has no plan on signing here after the season ends. After months and months where every single is Oder said Hanifin has informed the team he is moving on I do not see this as anything other than saying the nice thing to the media and fans in attendance

If the Flames re sign everyone it is going to be so disheartening.

If they are actually open to signing I would make Hanifin the #1 target to get signed and Lindholm #2.
The rest walking is fine.
The wait and see approach from them is interesting though. Probably want to make sure things really are different after last year with Sutter.

100%. The value of his contract and length would probably be reasonable for what he brings. Would love him coming back.

I don't think you have to worry about the Flames re-signing all their pending UFA's because the salary cap will make it impossible. They will be lucky to sign two of them.

Wasn't this an internal conversation between Conroy and Noah with Conroy relaying the message?
