Step away for a little bit to get the pitchfork and torch and now this is a nothing burger? Although I see Biz is still cranking it to 11.

It's not a podcast I listen to. I get that people don't like the dudebro hockey players, but this stuff likely doesn't even get out without them.
|
There's nothing particularly "hockey culture" about being asked to go through phone photos. That's just a weird request that shouldn't be allowed by an employer. Calling it out isn't calling out toxic culture as much as it's calling out a strange and invasive request.
Spittin Chiclets, despite some good interviews, might as well be 15 year olds in a locker room circa 2005 for the rest of it. It's pretty awful to listen to most times. I'm surprised the real F word hasn't been dropped on air, personally.

I am holding them accountable for their own actions, and I'm not blaming them for anything. I don't think the way they talk and address certain subjects is helping anything, however. It's not that they talk about those subjects, it's how they talk about them.
It's outdated and cringey as hell.

Even if they're telling the truth, that's still sooo weird if they exchanged phones or whatever to look through family photos.
Who takes another person's phone to "get to know" someone they're just meeting?
Creepers or serial killers, probably while at gunpoint.
No one asks for that casually or in a professional setting.

Nobody has ever asked to see pictures of your kids?
I've had co-workers do that before when catching up for sure.
NHL is still a pretty small circle and it's probably not Babcock's first time meeting all of these people.

I've never asked. I've definitely never asked. Yet I've seen a lot of family photos all the same.

Nah. Pull out your phone right then and there and send him a text that you don't have a phone.

I don't know what actually happened, but knowing the way former players have talked about Babcock, I'm thinking the truth is probably a little closer to what Biz is reporting.
"But a lot of that is no doubt tied to the numerous hits to Babcock’s reputation delivered by or on behalf of former players. There is, of course, the story of Babcock asking a young Mitch Marner to rank teammates from hardest-working to least-hardest-working, only to have the list revealed to teammates. There’s also the sad tale of Johan Franzen, the former Detroit Red Wings forward who has called Babcock a “bully” and “the worst (person) I ever met.” Franzen has said that Babcock’s repeated verbal attacks often left him “terrified” to go to the rink. His claims have been backed up by the likes of Hall of Famer Chris Chelios. And there’ve been other former players who’ve added to the pile.
Former Red Wings defenceman Mike Commodore, on the occasion of Babcock’s firing, tweeted that the Leafs quit on Babcock because he’s “a terrible human being,” not to mention “an average coach with an extremely oversized ego.”
Mark Fraser, the former Leaf, chimed in: “Anyone who thinks (Commodore) needs to lay off Babs just doesn’t understand how much hate players have for him.”

Probably a distorted result of the telephone game.
I'll never get over how gossipy hockey circles are though. I've heard about the drug activities and debauchery of players I have absolutely no personal connection to, just through individuals I know around the game. Which shows that even if the stories aren't accurate, there are people spinning stories and hearsay left and right.

I'll go with what the Players Association reports the players said to them, not what some ex players with an axe to grind have to say on the matter to generate clicks.
Right now it's looking that ex players who hate Babcock (no matter if it's justified) are vastly exaggerating in a negative way what happened.
See how this plays out, I guess, and there seems to be plenty of room for Biz and Babcock to come out of this looking like d-bags.

I mean.. Usually its a case of that person selecting a photo and holding it up for you to see. Maybe they hand it to you for a better glimpse if you're sitting across from them. Sure, that's normal.
Not where, like, someone gets to scroll through your gallery folder to get an impression of your family life. Which is the initial impression I got from the statements.

What about an old guy saying “I can’t see that ####, put it up on the TV” and then you joke to your buddy about how you had to make sure you didn’t scroll to far…

This statement is pretty gross:
“You want to #### with the players we’re going to bend you over no spit, no lube, sandpaper finish.”
Threatening rape - even metaphorically - isn’t a great look for someone trying to stake the moral high ground.

This is a pretty good example of the tone and content you can expect from this group.

I mean, players families are around the rink so is it weird that a new coach would want a primer on who's kids and wives are who's?

Not even "I'm", solo. Plural, "we're", Hockey Canada style.
