Check mate. I guess there is no crime on ctrains and it’s not a problem.
Countless articles and news stories posted from this year alone loses out to ridiculous comparison.
The point is I have no problem with the government making the streets and (public transit) more safe and neither should any sane person.
Arguing about non violent corporate crime is apples to oranges.
Both sides from UCP to NDP should support this, but like clock work every press release is met with this same “Karen” level derision.

Has it got worse recently? Yes. Is it as bad as it was pre-2010? No. Is it time to panic? Certainly not.

Lethbridge is half populated by seniors. So strange to see crime so high there.

Not if you have spent any time in their “downtown core”

You don’t have an issue with government making something that isn’t a problem seem like a way bigger problem than it is, and wasting money to solve said non-problem just to score some political points with the rubes they convinced that “Calgary is Dying” or some nonsense because of some cherry-picked articles.

“We don’t need more safety” Well unfortunately for you the majority of Albertans that voted for the UCP think different so I guess just sit back and complain about it.
This is the part of the article that hits home and I’m glad they are addressing.
“ Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis told an Edmonton news conference: “You have the right to walk down the street without being violently attacked. You have a right to take transit to work without inhaling second-hand crystal meth smoke, and you have a right to walk downtown without being caught between clashes of violent organized crime gangs.”

One doesn't have an issue with this if they are one of said rubes...

When was the last time any of that happened to you downtown?
Actually, when was the last time you even walked downtown?

Sorry, are we talking about the UCP or Mayor Gondek?
Quote:
Calgary mayor urges immediate action to address transit violence
Mayor Jyoti Gondek is calling on city administration to take immediate action to tackle violence on Calgary’s public transit system, a day after a woman was critically stabbed at the Lions Park LRT station.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Gondek said the pandemic had a major impact on Calgary’s transit system as illegal activity on the system rose because of lower ridership numbers. She noted that increased ridership alone will not stem the violence.
“Whether it is workers returning to the office, students heading to school or seniors travelling to a medical appointment, all Calgarians deserve a safe and dependable transit service,” Gondek’s statement read.
“Transit is an essential service at the core of any major city and people should not have to think twice before using it.”

I scootered around downtown Calgary for two hours. I was assaulted on four occasions, accosted twice, asked for chance three times (one asked for 20 bucks, can you believe it) and looked at seven times by scary looking people. Someone even had their shirt off walking around even though it was hot. It absolutely ruined everything I know about Calgary and now I know it's a violent hellhole that needs saving and probably a walk around it too.
Actually that may not have happened, but I was consuming copious amounts of national post newspapers and truth bombs from X on my phone that morning.

Like I said, I haven't noticed this massive spike in crime people like to talk about, and I'd rather wait for actual stats than just draw a conclusion from politicians commenting on something because it's brought up on social media a lot. "There were crackheads" doesn't count as violent crime, in my book

Does this count?

Crime at LRT stations has also increased across Calgary.
According to data from the CPS, the number of total crime occurrences in Q3 2022 went up by 45 per cent compared to the same period in 2021.

Ellis is an idiot.
LRT/C-train use is like every other aspect of city living. There is a chance of violence no matter where you go or what time you go there.
It would be nice to not have safety issues in life, but there is no freaking right to not have something happen anywhere in the city.
no, you don't have a "right"
I also think sometimes people say they're not safe on transit, merely when they're uncomfortable.
I take transit every single day, and have for years. I work with a lot of people who do the same. We all talk about it.
There seems to be an increase in the amount of homeless people who have nowhere to go and hang around transit centers, but I don't believe violence has increased much. Just the perception of criminal activity has.
