Terrible fight.
If Mayweather wins this fight for going backwards the entire 12 rounds, the sport of boxing might as well dissolve. It's a disgrace.

No, Girly...it was a very tactical fight by him. That's how he fights and you can't take it away from him. He's the best in the world.

From a blog site:

- This will not be the fight that saves boxing. In fact, this just might be the fight that puts the nail in the coffin. The two top fighters in the sport and the can’t put together something worth paying $54.95 for. [Shinguard] they won’t even go at it in the last round!

Ummm..they really went at it in the last round FF...it's not the place for MMA vs boxing rhetoric.

I dont take that away form him. But if you want to continue paying money to see boxers run a marathon in the ring be my guest. The heavyweight division is garbage and now the middleweight are too.

Boxing is officialy dead.

Didn't say it, just saw it on a blog and thought it matched what Larry was saying or what I read he was saying. No rhetoric here, I'm just the messenger.

To balance it out, SI says "tremendous fight"

They're just saying that to continually protect a sport that's been dead for years.
This was the big one.. and it was another flop.

Sorry if I seem defensive...I just hate the MMA vs boxing comparisons. As much as I love seeing two guys standing toe to toe and exchanging punches, as a participant in the sport I also can appreciate the beautiful footwork that Mayweather demonstrates in getting out of the way of all of those punches. I enjoy both MMA and boxing but you really can't compare the two.

I can agree with that. They are two related but different sports.

"Boxing is what it is, we will see a lot more...this is good boxing, good prize fighting and a helluva show." - Larry Merchant

"MMA - there's nothing in light years in MMA that can compare to what these guys did with their hands tonight." - Max Kellerman..from tonight's broadcast. Biased, yes...but why must we continue to compare two very different sports?

In a way Oscar was the winner from the beggining. I thought it was solid but Oscar let up too much in the later rounds where he should've kept moving forward.

I was impressed overall. I have to say that Mayweather is a total jackass. He won, but he's still a loser.

I'm disappointed that Oscar lost this fight but it wasn't a terrible fight. It wasn't a great one, but it was a good tactical fight from both De La Hoya and Mayweather and it came down to stamina. Oscar let Mayweather take real control of the fight after the 8th round. Had he kept with his strategy in the late rounds this would have been a different outcome.
That said though it wasn't a truly dominating win for Mayweather either. He was the better fighter in the end but not convincing IMO.

I wonder if there will be a rematch. I'm sure The Golden Boy won't want to retire without holding a title.

Great fight I have to say. Oscar really went for it but Floyd Jr.'s speed is just outstanding. He cannot be touched.
I scored it 115-113 Floyd personally but didn't think it was that close of a fight.
Yet again I was amazed at Mayweather's tactics and pure speed, just plain unreal.
Floyd says he will retire but with a split decision almost defineately there will be a rematch.
Especially with DLH getting a $25 million pay day and $10 to Floyd before the PPV residuals which will be gigantic.

You have to remember though that Oscar was the bigger price fighter, and his Golden Boy Promotions was responsible for the fight so at the end of the day Oscar's take was way more than that. I hope there is a rematch though.

I have to disagree. I don't think it was a flop. Most people seem to be of the opinion that a good fight has to be decided by a KO or a unanimous decision but that isn't always the case. I've seen a lot of disappointing fights decided by KO's. As disappointed as I am with the result you can't deny that this was a good tactical fight. Sometimes a lot more goes into a fight like this, strategy wise, that most people overlook. I'm in no way shape or form saying that it was a "great" fight but it was a good fight.

I agree with you that the result doesn't determine how good a fight is.
But there has to be more intensity and electricity. De La Hoya's been in many classic fights that have gone the distance. The one with Felix Trinidad "Fight of the Millenium" comes to mind right away. The one with Vargas was great too where De La Hoya wore him down for an 11th round KO.

Do you really like Mayweather's tactics? Is this what you pay money to see? A guy that doesn't jab and doesn't throw combinations? All he does is 1 punch and run and run and run.

It's supposed to be boxing, not dodging.

$60, I hope you got your money's worth.

If boxing continues to reward such boxers, the sport will be dead.
