6 years at $9 million per year is far from an insult IMO.

I agree.
Based on what we've seen this off season, lots of teams are shying away from long term contracts on players this age; so I think it would be difficult.
He'll be 29 then & 30 soon into that first season of that contract, I don't think 7 year offers is a given.
If Conroy could pull off a 6; that would be very well done.

It's just not that simple. I think when you own/run a sports franchise you have to be better at asset management (sign the player or move him), and hopefully we see that going forward.
But the Flames don't operate in a simple fantasy hockey bubble. They worry about franchise value, and being relevant. We've seen Canadian teams rise to the top of the no trade lists, I think they've seen the same with GM and coaching candidates.
If they feel that Lindholm will keep the Flames relevant for the next eight years, and that his decline rate will make him a valuable member to the team well into his contract ... they may see this as less cut and dried as some fans do.
As I said earlier ... better asset management, and then UFA decision on a player by player basis.
I don't see the move everyone suggestion as being very valid.

I’m at a wedding this evening in Toronto - I can report that nearly universally, Flames fans are held in the highest esteem among the rest of the country.
We are not insufferable. We are not delusional. We are not overbearing.
We get it.
Everything working against us?
We know.
And we’re still here.
That makes us hella endearing.
Cheers.

If the Flames offer him a 6. Year deal, he’ll test UFA.

Who are these guys that are getting 7 or 8 year deals recently past the age of 35? Outside of the Flames group (Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar) I can only think of Scott Mayfield and JT Miller as guys who have signed longterm contracts in the past 12-18 months that take them past the age of 35.
Almost nobody is giving contract years for guys beyond the age of 35, it is almost unheard of over the past 2 years.

Do you know who’s draft eligible in 8 years?
Maybe having $20m tied up in Huberdeau and Lindholm is exactly what gets us our top pick.

Just looking on the bright side - backdooring a rebuild may be the only way this gets done.

Johnny Guadreau, Phillip Grubauer, Dougie Hamilton, Zack Hyman, Alex Pietriangelo, Tory Krug…all since 2020. I’m sure there’s more leading up to that. Not too sure why you’re drawing the arbitrary 12-18 month timeline, it’s not like signing guys to this kind of term as they approach 30 hasn’t been happening for quite sometime. I doubt that changes now, especially as we are about to see large cap increases over the next 2-3 years, at least.
If the Flames can sign Lindholm to a 6 year extension, I’m sure they would but it seems very unlikely. Again, there has been a few (Stienberg, Vickers, etc) who have said multiple times that the Flames have an 8 year deal on the table. Is there a plausible scenario that exists where they could get Lindholm to sign for 6 years, other than paying him $11-12 per, if this is in fact true?

Johnny Gaudreau will be 35 in the last year of his contract
Phillip Grubauer will be 35 in the last year of his contract
Dougie Hamilton will be 34 in the last year of his contract
Zach Hyman will be 35 in the last year of his contract
Krug will be 35 in the last year of his contract.
You were right on Pietrangelo though, so that is another one. We are up to 3 players who will be older than 35 on the last year of their contract in the rest of NHL (plus the 3 the Flames have and potentially a 4th in Lindholm).

We're back to the days of giving players retirement contracts. All the big money should go to players coming out of their entry level contracts who still have upside to their game.

Tom Wilson will turn 37 in the last year of his contract. So will Couturier (though he'll probably just be a footnote on the Coyotes books by then).
Damon Severson will turn 36 before the last year of his contract. Same with Sorokin. Same with Zibanejad. and Parayko. and Landeskog.
Trocheck is another who will turn 35.

Fair.
I suppose the rest of the league has it figured out and it’s only the Flames handing out these deals. Wonder if any other team out there is dumb enough to sign Schifele, Hellybyck, Rienhart, or Lindholm’s to 7-8 years at the end of this season.

IMO only elite players should get 8 year deals if they are 30. So the Huby deal was fair. But I don't think Kadri or Weegar fall into that category.

Kadri signed a 7 year deal and Weegar is 29, so all good!

So that is pretty much everyone I think that I could find too. 9 guys in the entire league who are signed to play past their 35th birthday (who are not on the Flames). Plus the Flames with four more guys ( Kadri at 38, Huberdeau at 37, Weegar at 37 and potentially Lindholm at 37).
So 31 teams have a combined total of 9 of those contracts. The Flames could have 4 of them.

Backlund will be 35 after this season and if he re-signs, potentially him as well.

I am guessing he will be like most guys who sign in their mid 30’s and he will only sign a one or two year deal. Seems like most teams realize you don’t want to be locked into 8 years on a guy who will be in his late 30’s in 8 years but they are more than willing to sign a few guys that can still play at 36 to one year deals at a cheaper rate. I was more talking about how most teams won’t sign someone who is 30 to an 8 year deal anymore.

So, in five years from now, assuming Lindholm resigns, Huberdeau is 35, Kadri is 37, and Lindholm is 33.
I’m not saying it is a good thing but it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if Kadri is bought out at that point if his play starts to slide too much. If he’s still contributing, then great.

The league started doing a 180 from these contracts in the last few years. And yeah, it does look like we'll half a large percentage of the ones left.
