Some CP shenanigans whereby a "E=NG" sign is held up behind the Oilers bench (with photographic evidence of course).

I assume this may be impacted by the travel ban?

Maybe not, lol I thought it was soon but it’s not until September.
Here’s hoping they get that horrid blaze under control.

I would imagine there'd be some contingency plans.... perhaps relocate the tournament to one of the NHL cities...

I think they used to alternate host cities... I recall Red Deer was the venue one time.

Red deer definitely had it one year. I thinkbthe fires will be under control by the date, unfortunately the communities may be a mess for a long time

West Kelowna seems to get the brunt. I think the fires will have run their course by then.

Looks like the travel ban is in place until Sept 4. If it gets extended I’d say the tournament will be in jeopardy.

I think Reg is right, they'll just play with who they can in Red Deer or an other alternate location.

First game is next Friday the 15th, has the rock slide on 97 near summer land caused anyone to change their plans yet? Living in the Okanagan it is still easy for me to go on the back road detour.

Looking forward to the weekend as it will be the first time for us. I even have talked the other half into wearing one of my jerseys to the game against the no goods.

Hoping that we have a strong showing of flame fans!

Wait there's a rockslide? I'm coming from Victoria. Was still planning on it, but there seem to be reasons not to go.

The road closure only affects hwy 97 north of Penticton all other routes like #3 and the 97 south of Penticton are fine.

The detours for people driving south from Peachland add about 90 minutes to the drive.

I'll be in town for this as well, not for the tourney specifically but I'll probably try to catch a flames game

Thanks for the heads up. Reminds me that I should start looking at DriveBC to look at the conditions. Was going to leave before noon on Friday next week. Hopefully things get a sorted by then.

yea - the highway being closed sucks - oh well, the kids i'm sure will just call the detour "an adventure drive"!

Quote:
No timeline is available for when Highway 97 will reopen north of Summerland.
In a statement issued to Castanet, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure confirmed geotechnical engineers "continue to monitor and assess data from sensors at the slide site. The sensors show a steady continuing movement of the slope, and the highway remains closed to protect public safety due to the risk of further rockfall."

Travel between Penticton and Kelowna
  • Use 201 Forest Service Road
  • Gravel road (graded)
  • Accessed off Highway 33 near McCollough Road near Kelowna and via Warren/Carmi Avenue in Penticton
  • This route will add approximately 60-90 minutes of travel time
Travel between Summerland and Peachland
  • Use the Trout Main to Peachland Forest Service Road
  • Gravel road (graded)
  • This route will add 90 minutes of travel time

It has been a few years since I have driven it but the first route in bc-Chris’s post off of hwy 33 is almost the same as the smith-dorian in K country. It should be a decent drive as far as gravel roads go, it is wide enough for two lanes and a shoulder from what I recall.

Okay, That isn't too bad. I have done that road by Spray lakes a number of times. I'll keep that in mind if things are still blocked next week. Earlier when I looked at google, it suggested the driving south via highway 3. Now it is recommending the highway 33 and then McCollough. Difference is about 1.5 hours.

I’ll be there, but flying in. Hopefully the rocks didn’t make the airport.

One week until the unofficial launch of hockey season. The province is hoping to have one lane of hwy 97 open on the Saturday the 16th with alternating traffic.
Maybe they can get it done for Friday ( wishing for the best ).

Curious how many people are going?

Anyone interested in a pre game meet at a brew pub?
