Growing up Bilingual I will tell you that Albertans were always dicks about speaking french.

I hadn't eaten them since high school or so. These are pretty good even for adults for a meal in a pinch!

My friend was confused what the hell it even was so I looked up a description. The search engine mentioned it was a Canadian specific food item.

In elementary school (in Calgary) our French teacher was fired before my first lesson. They never rehired. I went through grades 4-6 without a single French class. I was in full French Immersion until Grade 12, I highly recommend it, I've also been to France a number of times.

I plan on learning it when my kid does, because if I’m not using it in conversation I won’t be able to learn it.

I recently did that. It was kind of neat to keep changing the year to see what they've done to the place over time.

I wish there was a “Derailed” notice and “Go to first Derailment Post” button for each thread. If I’ve missed a lot of discussion, I often go to the last post to catch up, then find I’ve missed a great derail and have to scroll back to find it.

Also, two years ago a friend and I walked our old neighbourhood; the current owner of our house was out front and we had a great chat. Unfortunately, he didn’t invite us in for a tour. I have viewed the house on a realtor’s website when it was on the market.

I've been to France 3 times, I've also been to Tahiti which is a French Principality and Paris is one of my favourite cities.

As I said, I took French Immersion until Grade 12 and I can conclusively say that 'Canadian French' is a complete goddamned joke.

But learning it is better than nothing and it is often handy.

I went back to the house my family rented in Lower Sackville earlier in Aug this year.

First time back since we moved in the mid 80's.

I had gone on google street view with the kids to look at it and it looked like hell.

Seeing it live and in the flesh was even worse.

As a parent of a French Immersion student, I can assure you, you will not be learning any French by osmosis through your child. In fact, the only French you are likely to hear is at Parent-Teacher interviews.

I have the opposite view. I didn't take French all the way through, but it's largely forgotten because it's basically useless. Aside from uppity shopkeepers in Paris, there was no need to actually speak French there.

Before our trip to Paris I tried to pick up some French (hadn’t taken a class since elementary school) so I had some basic communication skills. My wife spent quite a bit of time in Montreal and was fluent in Canadian French but that was a couple decades ago so she was rusty (can understand, but sometimes has to think about speaking it). Pretty much every place we went, we were greeted with “bonjour, hello”. We would reply with bonjour, and they immediately switched to English. There may have only been one or two times my wife got to try out her French. Almost had to force it.
