I thought the estimated number involved in the skirmish in Calgary was 180, but whatever. The number of people participating is probably only a fraction of the number of people who would be willing to participate. Just like the number of Trumpists who stormed the capitol is actually a lot smaller than the number as whole. The incident has made international news, being mentioned on DW and the BBC, in conjunction with other similar incidents in several cities in Canada and across the world. It was a pretty big deal.
This wasn't a bar fight or donnybrook between a small number of people who don't like each other. If it was just like 10 or so Eritrean young males getting into a scrap against each other, no one would bat an eye. This was a politically motivated mob that was wielding make-shift weapons, throwing bottles, attacking police, and causing serious injuries to people (at least one bystander), and business and property damage against third parties with absolutely nothing to do with their hang ups.

I still can't get over this clash and the Eritrean people. It's like they're introducing a new annoying character into the latest season of life and this was the trailer to wow-whizz-bang us so we know what to look forward to. Fighting with clubs and sticks? WTF is this?
, realized very quickly that there is a contingent of posters who would immediately take the most uncharitable possible interpretation of what they said and run with it…
On CP?

Why all the hostility? Do you need a hug?

If I didn’t know any better I’d swear you were trying to portray someone as a victim because someone passed judgement on a post they made based literally on the words they wrote in that post.

I've seen what flamesfever has posted before, there is nothing about anything that they've previously shared that I can remember that would make me prone to assuming the worst about their character or the intent behind their post.
Is this the part where I’m supposed to say something along the lines of “well I would make the opposite assumption based on their history” and then you chastise me for jumping to conclusions? I’m not gonna play that game.
I can say this much about flamesfever’s posting history, there are some things we agree on and some things that we don’t.

Perhaps you should try harder to have the proper context required to judge whether or not flamesfever meant their remarks in the way you're suggesting here. In any event, there is nowhere near enough historical evidence vis-a-vis their post history to make your assertion of their malintent credible. Maybe you could ask them what they meant to say?
You’re certainly entitled to your opinion torquedog.

Can someone eli5 why pro-government people would seek refugee status in Canada?
If you are down with the government, why leave?

Thank you for your charitable remarks. I have nothing against the Eritrean people per se, except for the hatred that some of them bring with them. However, the fact that such a thing can happen in Calgary, where so many of them were breaking our laws, injuring some of our police, and providing such a poor example for immigrants in general, it’s telling me that there needs to be more done, by the people in our Immigration System, to make them aware of the consequences of such behavior.
I realize I am a bit of an outcast here, because of my Conservative bias, and this may be why iggy oi tends to go out of his way to give me a hard time. It also explains why I tend to focus on the inefficiencies of our Federal Government

In my experience it's not unusual for first generation immigrants to bring a certain degree of hatred for things that have gone on in their country of origin. However, I have never seen it manifest to the degree witnessed in NE Calgary. Fortunately, the hatred tends to disappear in the generations to follow.

I recall there being a lot of violence within the Sudanese immigrant/refugee community which has been ongoing for many years. It hasn't erupted into a big 150 person brawl but the multitude of events is still shocking.

Going out of my way to give you a hard time? I literally made one comment on your post and left it at that but if you want to play the victim go right ahead.

Initially I was honestly kind of hoping you were just obliviously regurgitating the standard rhetoric to criticize the federal government but the problem is you keep doubling down on assuming that all of the people who engaged in committing these acts were immigrants simply based on their ethnicity when you don’t know that to be true. It may turn out to be the case once the police investigation is completed but in my view until that time your comment can’t be described as based on anything other than a racial prejudice.
You can either be mad that someone is pointing it out to you or you can use this as a bit of a wake up call to reassess how you look at things. It’s up to you. We’re all a work in progress at the end of the day.
As a main character myself, I also believe people go out of their way to target me. I’ve even suspected people of forming groups to target me, like… gangs… or unions… or brigades, even.

Artur Pawlowski is one of these. Listen to him talk for any length of time, and the fear of Eastern European repression is a pretty big driver fueling his insanity.

I've been thinking the same thing over the past few days. I can't get over the absurdity of the situation. Like, out of 150 people, no one thought to bring a better weapon than a stick or a bat?
I am even starting to think maybe it was some kind of civil war re-enactment and it was all just one big misunderstanding when the police showed up and it got real.

Luckily your incredible charm gives you an impenetrable force field, though.

I wonder if someone looked into how this was “organized”, people must have thought or known that potentially using deadlier weapons could lead to deportation? I don’t know, it is a reach obviously. But I also wonder why these are the weapons of choice for this conflict.
