5 miles? That’s like walking from the East Village to Edworthy (a little less, actually) — so harrowing!

Well the tweet you're referencing didn't call the walk harrowing and regardless five miles in mud, real nasty mud, isn't easy or fun

Only hippies could find a way to drown in the Desert.

Good thing they were all prepared to be radically self reliant.

I can smell them through the screen. All jokes aside, I've only known one person years back, to go to this festival. Has anyone here gone?

I went twice, twenty years ago (God that makes me feel old to say). Was absolutely amazing and incredibly difficult at the same time. I'm super glad I went, if the right situation presented itself I'd probably go again. I don't know if it's "the same" as it was back then, but back then people were already saying that it "wasn't the same" as it used to be.

I'll bet it's still enormously fun and if you've never been, would be one of the wilder experiences of your life.

Is it even really a hippy thing anymore? Seems more like a bunch of rich kids cosplaying as hippies.

I've been a few times. It's pretty fun but, at least for me, got a bit stale after a while. Someone that I work with called me to say that he's trapped in Black Rock and won't be at work until Thursday.

Its not even that so much, but I do find it hilarious that most of the 'old hippies' settled down, got jobs as Bankers and Lawyers so they could afford new trucks and trailers and just gradually became 'The Man' they raged against.

I just noticed the steps are still down on the trailer. Truly a "alright, #### this, let's get out of here right now" moment. We've all been there after a bad camping trip.

I just love how Burners talk all high and mighty about the principles of the event and how they're doing something "big" when it's really just a party in the desert. Like a couple of the ten principles...Radical self reliance, leave no trace, decommodification...

You're practicing those by renting a camper and filling it up with supplies you purchased from Costco? ...what you've described is camping. You're going camping in the desert. It's not that radical.

I dunno. I guess if I ever went, it would just be for all the fun, unique experience. I am sure not all of the attendees are into all of the philosophies surrounding the event so ai don’t think it’s necessarily fair to paint them all with the same brush as if shopping at the farmers market once in a while suddenly means you prescribe to all of those ideals often associated with them.

First thing I noticed.... that's not gonna be fun when they catch ground in a deep puddle or rut.

And yes, I know this feeling, steps down and all. LOL

There's a pretty different vibe to Burning Man than other, similar events. Back in the early 00's I went to god knows how many raves, parties, multi-day festivals, Shamballah's, etc. and there's nothing that feels like Burning Man.

Similar in a lot of ways? Sure, but qualitatively different.
