So. Depressing.
Knowing that, the Flames cannot keep doing what they’ve always done and say they intend to compete for a Stanley Cup.
I would like to see the team draft lots and draft well over a sustained period of time. Let’s see some patience. No more going for it every year by throwing draft picks away at the deadline for veteran depth to help the team make the playoffs or go on a run. No more short-circuiting team building by trading away multiple high draft picks for veterans.

I was thinking more of 2004 and on.
One finals appearance, rebuilds that didn’t go as planned, one year in the playoffs, next year not.

Generational center fallen to the lap of our rival.

Yeah for the most relevant time frame the franchise's have performed very similarly. Not sure how relevant things are from 20 years ago.

I do think that they have been receiving low ball offers but I am assuming that we are going to receive better deals than both Johansen (1 dimensional forward at this point) and Hall with his stock at an all time low.
I am expecting Hanifin to bring back similar value than what Dubois brought back. I am not sure what the market is like for Lindholm but you have to assume that someone at some point is really going to want a #1 centre.
You wait it out until either they sign or the offers become substantial.

What is relevant in your mind? Because youre going to have to be careful you dont accidentally pick a timeframe that makes us appear worse than the oilers.
Since 2010 they've won 6 and we've won 3.
You have to limit us to like 2015 to beat the flyers in playoff success.
The bulk of the board have been fans of the team since 2004 at least judging by the age poll.
Really, this is a difficult position to hold. The flyers are just a better franchise than us for playoff success over the period most of us have been fans.

It's a valid comparison - really whether a team wins a first round series 5 times vs 2 times is a bit irrelevant to me. No team was really that much closer to winning.
Since the 10-11 season neither the Flyers or Flames made the conference finals. Flames made it to the second round 2 times, Flyers made it 3 times.
Neither team committed to a proper rebuild (although Philly might be now), and both have had to deal with their biggest rivals continually getting handed generational players (Lemieux/Crosby vs Gretzky/McDavid).
Honestly no better comparison for two teams in sports IMO.

since the salary cap there has truly only been one successful season from the perspective of fans. 2014-15 and the trip to the second round. We were huge underdogs, young and facing a team we just couldn't beat in the second round. there were no hard feelings. We were hopeful.
Other than its been an spastic combination of awful under performers and good teams that choke and blow leads in playoff games.
It's bleak. I love this franchise, but we are not cheering for a competitive team.

18-19 and 21-22 were successful seasons.
Winning the division is always a success, even if the playoff success didn't follow as fans had hoped.

18-19 was brutally disappointing. Gut wrenching honestly.
21-22 was a ####ing embarrassment. their worst loss since the last time they lost to the Oilers in the playoffs.

Michkov and Gauthier isn't a bad way to kick off a rebuild.
Michkov is a true wildcard but his ceiling is as high as they come.

You're focusing on the last 4 games of the season when A) The goaltending was terrible, and B) I think they extend that series to 7 if the Coleman goal counts in game 5 (as it should have).
As a whole for the entire body of work the 21-22 season was a success.

Only one team wins the cup.
18-19 and 21-22 as a whole were successful seasons.
Were the playoffs a disappointment - 100%
And yes overall the franchise is terrible and there is an overall lack of success. But 18-19 and 21-22 weren't the problems.
107+ points and a division win is a successful season.
The problem is that all the other years from 13-14 to 22-23 we didn't finish any higher than 3rd in the division and didn't come close to 100 points. Those seasons are the problem, not 18-19 and 21-22. Generally if you string together consistent seasons of success where you are top 4 in your conference you will get some playoff success, the Flames problem is they can't do that consistently.

If the Flames could more consistently achieve regular season success, playoff success will eventually follow.

I am focusing on the end result of the season. This isn't soccer the regular season is a means to an end, the point is to compete in the best, most entertaining and rewarding hockey of the year the playoffs.
I fully understand only one team wins the cup and that it is a very difficult task. A team can have a good year without winning the cup from the perspective of a fan. Nevertheless, winning two playoff rounds in 17 years is hardly success by any metric. Losing to your biggest rival in their biggest matchup in 20 years is not fun, or rewarding, it is awful, one of the worst things that can happen to you as a fan. Blowing leads in the third period as a heavy favorite three games in a row and being blow out of the first round isn't entertaining, it is disappointing.

I think we have forgotten how fun the playoffs are. My friends who are die hard watch every game, know every prospect fans of good teams barely care about regular season. It is the month and a half of hockey in spring that they are waiting for.
Don't get me wrong, I love watching the Flames and am entertained by the culture and the game during the regular season. But it feels like we get to eat the potatoes and watch other people eat the steak.

I don't know if that's true. I love the playoffs and watch them straight through regardless of whether the Flames are in them or not (usually not lol).
I'm not even suggesting that season success is equal to playoff success, but season success is a thing on its own, and there's some joy and entertainment to be had there, too.
