For training I'm actually going to look into a service that would potty train it before we let it into our home. Not dealing with that. The barking is an ongoing problem with this breed, though, so I really have to remove the bark box or I'm not doing it.

It's really the only sticking point for me...the barking. They seem to be a popular breed so if it doesn't work out I don't think it'll be a problem to find it a forever home.

I was looking at monkeys, but they seem to be a total PITA to own. Even the small ones. This dog could be okay because it's cat sized, which I like, and I think I would like to put its floppy ears on my cheek when I lay down to snuggle it.
Debark? Please don’t. You’d be a terrible dog owner. Suggesting paying a vet under the table is disgusting.

Wow, ya, that would be just as annoying as barking. Even ignoring how evil it is. Seems a pretty #### solution.

Better yet, rescue one that came from generations of strays…. Always a sound idea.

Oh please. Unless you're a vegan I think you can pipe down. Do you eat chicken? Pork? Cows? Wear leather?

Hardly cruel to do a slight mod and then give a fkn dog a home for the rest of its life (or rehome as the case may be). Don't be ridiculous.

Well hopefully the procedure is better now. That sound is pretty annoying.

With barking being a stress / stimulation indicator for dogs, if you remove it or punish them for it, you'll be increasing the likelihood of an unprovoked bite.

Would you rather a dog tell you to back off with a bark / growl or get bit in the face? Removing their vocal chords may also have side effects such as that.

I'll risk a little bite from a little dog before I'll listen to insessant barking.

Also read you can get tranquilizers for these dogs to chill them out, so that would help with the barking.

My advice for sliver:
Esthetics should be the last thing you worry about when it comes to choosing a dog.
Since you are worried about barking, drooling and shedding choose a breed or mix that doesn't come by that naturally.

You will love this dog no matter what it looks like so long as it doesn't annoy the #### out of you.

Do you have a problem with badgers, Sliver? A dachshund will solve that for you.

The fact that you admitted it long ago in the ongoing dog bite thread probably leads people to that conclusion.

Can't even imagine what the context would have been for that. Do you have a link?

Yeah and get this: I saw a bear on a hike last Wednesday and I kept going on the hike. Weird how people can evolve and change over a decade and a half, eh? Or should I have just stagnated and stayed exactly the same as who I was when I was 30 even though I'm 46 now?

What I eat or wear has nothing to do with unnecessary surgery on a dog, but do what you want.

Not that I agree with debarking (I would just not get a dog if those were my options) but it is always interesting thinking about the man/dog relationship in the west compared to the way we view other animals.

Elective surgery on a dog that you'll then love and care for until it dies of natural causes? Monstrous.

Sitting down for a plate of slaughtered animals that lived in relative hell or killing and skinning an animal for a cool-looking jacket? Let's go, baby!

Well if you're crying for a dog I assume it's because you don't want an animal to suffer. I would consider the suffering quite minimal and temporary in exchange for the chance of a long happy life - a life that doesn't involve annoying the fk out of my family and all my neighbours' families. I wish everyone would debark their dogs. I hate listening to those little fkers barking in neighbourhoods, camping, etc. It's the trashiest noise.

So anyway, if you're going to worry about that I'm just surprised you're not worrying about all the more important suffering going on out there to which YOU are directly responsible if you're a meat eater. Have you ever been on a kill floor? I have. It's pretty crazy. And have you ever seen how chickens are transported to kill facilities? I have. They're allowed a certain number of DOAs enroute, BTW. So these chickens either die from being too hot or of hypothermia or of suffocation while sandwhiched in god-awful crates stacked one on top of another soaked in their own excrement. Terrified the whole time, btw.

The dog my wife is considering getting will face one millionth of the suffering YOU are complicit in putting animals through every single time you put meat in your mouth, so yeah, pipe down unless you're a vegan.

To be fair, I don’t think you can just use the excuse of, “well people do worse things” to justify questionable behaviour. I’d just opt to not get a pet. Go visit a dog park or a dog cafe, if those exist, or Petland.
