Dammit. Wrong thread.

But these clowns could stand to learn a few things from Star Trek!

Hope you like your children educated like it's 1885.
The Saskatchewan policy that they're referencing (and you as well with your 1885 comment, I assume) and wanting implemented in Alberta is:

https://s3.documentcloud.org/documen...y-students.pdf

"...Given the sensitivity of gender identity disclosure, when a student requests that their preferred name, gender identity, and/or gender expression be used, parental/guardian consent will be
required for students under the age of 16.

For students 16 and over, parental consent is not required.
The preferred first name and pronoun(s) will be used consistently in ways that the student has requested.

In situations where it is reasonably expected that gaining parental consent could result in physical, mental or emotional harm to the student, the student will be directed to the appropriate school professional(s) for support. They will work with the student to develop a plan to speak with their parents when they are ready to do so..."

Do you disagree with the policy?

That’s one policy mentioned that they would like something similar for. I’m not sure how you read that and decided that was the only thing they were after, but oh well.

And yeah, I disagree with the policy. If a kid of any age wants to be called a different name at school, in what world does that require parental consent? It’s the child’s name, not the parent’s.

These policies are so hard to support or not. To me, every single child and every situation can be different from the next. I personally would want to know if my child wants to use a different pronoun. But I really don’t think it would be a problem for my personal situation as I spend lots of time with my kids and have lots of conversations. So I would know what my kids want by talking to them, not from hearing it from school.

Some parents would want to know so they could support their children and some would want to know so they could stop their children.

Some children might know more about themselves at 10 years old than the next child knows about themselves at 14.

Really really tough to group everything together when every situation can be so different.

If my kid was in that situation, I would actually become quite angry and agitated if the school withheld that from me. If my child is going through something, potentially dysmorphia or gender dysmorphia, the parents should be made aware, of course. I'm responsible for the child's wellbeing, not the school.

It’s your child withholding it from you, not the school. The school is just going with what the child wants at that point.

As you said, you’re responsible for the child’s well-being, not the school. Which means the school is also not responsible for helping you be a parent. If there is something being withheld, that’s between you and your child.

Why would you think the child would be comfortable telling the school but not you?

EDIT: looks like I was beaten to that one. But the school does have a responsibility for the child’s well-being as well. At least one would hope so seeing as they’re being entrusted with the kid for a good chunk of the day.

Yeah, except sometimes that puts the kid at risk if they have fundamentalist parents or something, so it's not that simple.

I, too, would want to know, but I can appreciate the difficult situation the school is in if looking out for the kid is their priority. So many crappy people/parents that it could be detrimental for the kid if the wrong type of parents find out.

It also takes away some agency from the kid...if their parents are open to the kid choosing their own path, the kid would probably not be keeping such a topic from their parents. I'm 100% sure if my kids were going through something like that they'd not keep it from me because I have a long track record of not being a bigot.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a hater to the core and my kids are well aware of this. But I direct my hate toward people that keep a sloppy house, pick their bare feet in my presence, dry wipe their ass, drive poorly, etc. But for things you can't help? Very tolerant.

I wish the poll function was available. I'd be interested to see something like:

'When a student aged 15 or under requests that their preferred name, gender identity, and/or gender expression be used:

A - Parent/Guardian must be informed and consent required
B - Parent/Guardian must be informed, however, consent not required
C - Parent/Guardian does not need to be informed'

I think parents should be informed if the change in preferred name/gender identity is coupled with tangible and problematic behaviours (withdrawn, grades dropping, tardiness, etc.), but if we're just notifying parents based solely on the change in preferred name/gender identity doesn't that imply we think that change is negative, a problem or somehow wrong?

The fundamental problem is that some really ####ty people are parents. If a kid is showing up at school requesting people change their name/gender identity / pronouns... I think you are likely to see 2 scenarios at home

A - Parents have a functional relationship with their child and are either already aware of, or has some level of unspoken awareness.
B - The child is at risk of abuse / abandonment for making those choices and the institution reporting the child is willing to be complacent in that abuse because of their own bias's and stereotyping.

Children are human beings with a right to privacy, especially when disclosing something may put them at risk of harm.
The state does not have the right to violate that right to privacy, especially when doing so may put them at risk of harm.

Parent's are children's guardians, not their owners.
There are situations where children can/do/should have an expectation of privacy, even from their parents.

But yeah, you also have a nuanced, well articulated thought on the matter too.

The only reason parents should be informed is maybe because of logistics matters. Like you go to the school to pick up your kid or something and don’t know their preferred name.

At the same time, like Pepsi said, you might just be a pretty crappy or completely disengaged parent if this is something you don’t know or your child didn’t want to divulge to you.

Based on what your saying, do you support the policy?

Name, identity and gender expression can't be used at school without permission before 16?

Better reign in their names and character genders on Fortnite, handles and filters on Tik Tok, and the nicknames they got on the sports team they play on then. Can't have kids under 16 masking who they REALLY are.

Go big or go home.
