Speaking of street lights - anybody notice the amount of lights that appear to be glowing blue across the city?
It’s more than a few (I notice them mostly on Stoney Trail NW).
My theory is that a few diodes (is that the right descriptor here?) are burning out and leaving them to turn blue as a result.
Yes/no/maybe

Not that y'all don't have a legitimate gear-grinder but I know a few parents complaining about this and I distinctly remember August 31st-ish start dates for school 20+ years ago... I definitely started high school classes the Wednesday or Thursday before the Labour Day weekend. I remember it well because when I went to university the fall semester started after the weekend, which I found quite abnormally late.

I thought the blue/purple colour was a manufacturing defect and would be warranty replaced? Thought I read that some where.

Blue/Purple lights are a manufacturer defect from a few years ago, the city has replaced most of their defective bulbs other than a few spots on their own property, but Alberta Transportation has decided to just keep using theirs so you'll see them on Stoney for a while yet
Sadly at the start of 2023 Enmax stopped doing streetlight repairs and now a private company has the contract, and they have no clue what they're doing

Always hated this with my kids growing up but it's a simple solution. Don't send your kids in until Tuesday. They do absolutely nothing that first day and a half and it sends a message to your school division (which they won't hear anyway). They just do it to get the magical 'hours of instruction' number they need. Then they'll have a day off before September's over due to some professional day. It's quite comical.

The old teacher paradox. We won't pay them any more so they work less.

No, but there is one or two on Shaganappi by Northland Mall that are flickering on and off like they are possessed.

Apparently the coating that turns the LEDs white is failing on some lights due to a manufacturers defect that existed between 2017-2019.
Happening all over a North America. The lights just need to be replaced.

I don't have an issue keeping my kids out (I do so for vacations, weddings, etc) but wouldn't want them to miss the first day. Not because they're likely to learn anything academic, but because I don't want them to miss learning the routine, making friends, etc.

Iconic is now doing all that work, and even the LRT maintenance enmax used to do will be performed by a new crew of city workers. Can't say how well that will go over as the city recently had job postings for linemen and PSEs / technologists. Who knows if any of their hires have experience maintaining or operating the LRT equipment.

It's great to have that early transition day to figure out what is going on and what is happening for parents who are going to the school for the first time via transition or changing schools.
I could kinda see and understand why some parents get annoyed by it once they nail down the process. It's incredibly disruptive and annoying to accommodate to most parent's working schedules, even if they are WFH.

I was curious what the downside of having bluish purplish lights for streetlights in an entire city would be like. It seems like it could kinda give a city character since all other cities have 2700K yellowish lights or 3000K/4000K white lights.
TBH, I'd be curious whether customizing light poles could do something similar and give a city some character.

The photo radar ticket I got in the mail a few days ago grinds my gears. Apparently the speed limit on Barlow SB before 114th Ave SE is now 60, despite it being 70 in the past AND they added a traffic light to turn right onto Barlow SB after 114th. Why would they reduce the speed on Barlow AND add in that traffic light? Going 60 there feels unreasonably slow. It's also 70 going NB on Barlow right after 114th, so for the same stretch of road it's 70 in one direction, but 60 in the other direction?
Anyone know when it went from 70 down to 60 in that stretch? I'm wondering if I plead guilty (I was going 76 so still speeding technically even if it was 70) but say I was not aware of the changed speed limit if I might get a reduction? My buddy said they changed it like a year ago, but I'm skeptical as I drive that stretch a lot. I'm also wondering if saying that the same stretch of road going NB is 70 and not 60 is confusing might help my case?

It was there in May 2021. It doesn't show up in the 2019 image, but it looks like they repaved then, so maybe that is when it went up:

Assuming this is the spot.

For once the city is doing things right. If there is a neighborhood that deserves Napalm its Mackenzie town. As parasitic a community that could ever exist.

FYI the limit going northbound has been 60 km/h until north of 114th Ave for... basically forever. The speed limit change from 70 km/h to 60 going southbound occurs at exactly the same spot the northbound limit goes from 60 to 70, so I wouldn't waste your time barking up that tree. (The speed limit signage in the median share opposite sides of the exact same post...)

I commute that daily. After the construction the speed never went back up to 70 there, it's been a long time as 60.
If mrkajz44 drives that stretch a lot... I'm surprised he's only got the one photo radar ticket. I see that thing flash at least 5 times as I'm driving there.

He fails to recognize all the lives being saved by having that there. Stop being selfish with you having to be there 15 seconds sooner.
