Benn and Johnston for Hanifin and Backlund
Robertson - Hintz - Pavelski
Dadonov - Seguin - Duchene
Marchment - Backlund - Dellandrea
Steel - Faksa - C. Smith
Lindell - Heiskanen
Hanifin - Hakanpaa
Suter - Lundqvist
Harley
Would think they’d make another move to allow Harley to get some time but that is a stacked, yet aged lineup. They want to win though, and taking Benn off the books makes the most sense for them. While we would acquire a potential star center in Johnston, who would flourish in Calgary, this means we wouldn’t have the cap room to re-sign Lindholm. So, this is the kind of retool-like move I’d like Calgary to make. It would allow us to grab a potential franchise player and also forcing our hand and moving on to new blood. I know it doesn’t matter anyway, as Benn likely never accepts to be here.

And honestly, I’d still do the deal if Lindholm is added over Backlund and we get Harley and a 1st included on their end.
Dallas could then re-sign Lindholm as 2C with Pavs’ money and Pavs likely re-signs for less.

The only way you are getting Johnston is with an extended lindholm going the other way. Even then that might be a stretch. There just doesn’t seem to be a big market this summer for players. I don’t think that’s going to change before camp.

Understatement, they're not trading Johnston period.

Hence taking on the boat anchor of Benn, it would be the only way we could at least stay on the line regarding him. I understand not wanting to trade the guy, but I doubt he reaches full potential behind Hintz, who is the more complete player. Hintz/Lindholm and Hanifin behind Heiskanen and Lindell makes that team scary to play against. They might even be able to sign Lindholm at a reasonable deal with a Hintz-like cap hit.
It was no secret the Stars played better when Benn wasn't on the team from being suspended. I don't even like Benn, but I would take him on for 2 years if it made we could have a decade or more with Johnston.

Highly unlikely Benn waives his NMC to come to Calgary.

Suter is the issue in Dallas. The coach plays him way too much and the gm wants to cut that crutch. I'd say he has negative value, but that's the cap dump coming back.
I'd look at suter and stankoven straight up for hanifin , maybe get a pick thrown in

He has connections to Huska from Rocket days, no? If good connection and Dallas doesn’t want him anymore, still unlikely?

And he’s got a nmc. And he’s a pain in the ass from what people have said. And American to boot so Calgary is the last place he’d want to come to (ok edm and wpg prolly higher on list). But would be funny if he did come and convince Coleman to give up #20 and see all those old Suter jerseys be relevant again. But ain’t gonna happen.

I thought Nashville is retooling/rebuilding. Don't see they want veteran players to add.

Still need veterans to build your culture. Duchene was just making 6 million a year… he’s great for a rebuild at 1-2 million… still need to hit the cap floor.
Typically you can’t buy a guy out and resign him to a lower contract value… have to wait a year.
Unless you make a strong case like Michael Stone…

Makes no sense for Nashville to buyout Duchene and his $8M cap hit to have cap penalties for 6 years to sign him back next summer

Not this trade again.
Johnston isn't being traded, and zero chance Benn waives for Calgary, or likely anywhere.
Johnston's value is sky high, as he's good and cheap, just what Dallas needs, as opposed to two UFA's to be they likely cannot afford because they traded Johnston.

Proposals on CP tend to go to either extreme. Either we get a Mediocre middle six winger and meh prospect or we get a young budding star that would make zero sense for the other team to trade.

But you can always balance a trade proposal out by adding or subtracting a Hanowski or two.

If it got us Johnston, I'd take just about any two year commitment.
Clowns like that may be hated, but his teammates don't.
