I'm just thinking he might want to come home and play for the Flames.

Sign him and retool with the rest of the UFAs.

Hope to hell you can have a Boston type run of several competitive seasons with aging centers who decline gracefully.

There should be a deadline for Lindy and Backs to make a decision on their futures here, if they haven't already. I would hope that nothing is being held up for that. S**t or get off the pot.

It’s likely the lack of a viable trade market that is holding up a trade, not players “making up their minds”.

How do you know that? Perhaps Conroy would like to keep both players, and re-sign them, but those two are still "waiting" to see how things go before giving Conroy a decision on whether or not they will sign....

It's not cut and dried that either are going anywhere.

I actually agree with him and....they'd better be.

I think they're going to roll the dice on the Trade Deadline or whatever circumstances pop up during the season because the prices right now seem abysmal.

But Backlund, Lindholm and Hanifin should not be on our roster come season's end.

I agree somewhat, I think rival GM's are trying to take advantage of a first-year GM, on top of what would be already abysmal offers.

I think the 3 players are in different categories. Hanifin has to go by the trade deadline, as he has already told management that he won't re-sign. That much is certain. Rumours about Lindholm lately seem to be turning towards the team wanting to re-sign him. Indeed, if we truly want to win now, keeping Lindy would be the first option, but these are only rumors. Backlund seems far more likely to go, but I think we'll have to wait until the TDL to get anything of value for him.

We all have our opinions, but we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, or what's going on in Conroy's head.

Perhaps.

But the one fact we do know is that there is a lack of trade partners and teams that can take on cap. Conroy has said as much.

But it's the reason why Conroy can't draw a line in the sand and say "you've got to make a decision prior to X or I'm going to trade you". Conroy does not want to paint himself into that corner.

One of the reasons Conroy may be interested in resigning these players is the lack of a viable trade scenario.

I think Conroy has an open mind in keeping/trading, whatever is best for the team.

He needs to have an open mind, because one of these alternatives may not be there, or it may be zero or two.

If the players decide not to sign for what Conroy considers acceptable, and the trade market continues to stink, I believe he'll go into the season and wait until, the trade deadline when these players should fetch more.

He'll consider that the best solution of a bunch of bad choices.

In an interview not too long ago, Huska stated that he expects some of the players who haven't re-signed yet to end up re-signing as the season unfolds due to a variety of factors (I believe he mentioned the environment on the team this year, and how good they believe they will be, among other things).

Assuming that Huska is in regular communication with Conroy (or at least knows something), then it sounds like Conroy is going to start the season with what I assume are the higher-value upcoming UFAs.

That's certainly the direction that things appear to be headed in. I really don't want to be Conroy right now. I actually feel really sorry for him if things don't work out. What is he supposed to do? Just start unloading players for pennies on the dollar in this soft market? That won't help the Flames either compete this season, or help the rebuild. That will just set this organization back years.

However, what happens if this market is still soft by the trade deadline? What if the Flames are just in the playoffs, and players don't want to re-sign still? That's a lot of 'what ifs', but it certainly feels like the Flames are entering this season somewhat in limbo, or at the very least, feels like they are rolling the dice at the roulette table.

I also think that most teams aren't interested in doing 'hockey trades' at the deadline, as they are looking to add pieces rather than look for a 'shake-up'. If pieces like Lindholm and Hanifin don't want to re-sign still, and the Flames are just in a playoff spot, and there are no good offers for a hockey trade, only a futures trade, does Conroy pull the plug on the season? Will he even have the autonomy to do so? On one hand, you have a bunch of players playing hard for their new deals, but on the other hand, there is so much noise still with new coaching, players wanting out, etc.,.

I can see this team surprising people and doing really well, and I can see this team imploding as well and being pushed into a rebuild. Interesting times ahead. The only person in this organization that I really feel sorry for is Conroy. I think he is really stuck between a rock.. and a wall of fire.

I like the theory, with the exception of Hanifin, I still expect a trade to occur, before the season starts.

Others might resign (Lindholm, Zadorov, Kyington)

Not sure with Backlund

Couldn't agree more. The Flames are in an absolute position of weakness, and everyone knows it. I've actually been pretty happy that Conroy is being patient. As uncertain as things are with the team right now, things could get a whole lot uglier if these trades don't yield decent returns. It would have been easy to come in guns blazing and making all sorts of deals for the sake of putting his stamp on the team, but I'm glad he's navigating this situation carefully.

The real conundrum will be if the players won't sign but that Flames are doing exceedingly well. It may be hard to punt the season, but walking all those players to UFA is also not the answer, especially if the market for those players as rentals is real strong. As I expect it would be.

It's been said a ton, but Lindholm strikes me to be a player who ages well. Who ever he signs with will get good value.

For what it is worth Seravalli said to Steinberg that Lindholm is trending towards resigning. To me it sounds like Lindholm is listening to the new coaches and trying to discern if the work environment will be better. Hard to do that from Sweden. So, I understand Conroy being patient.

If Lindholm resigns then it may be in training camp like Weegar. If he’s back around the team and things are positive and happy and Lindholm is still not willing to commit then, in my opinion, Conroy needs to trade him by Christmas.

I hope he’s right! Love to get lindholm back and work a few trades to get younger and cheaper.

I really do think this team can compete especially if they can get a little younger and faster.

If we’re serious about competing, having Lindholm on the team is the best option. We’re not going to replace him him any top-line “right now” talent.

Also doesn't seem we can trade him for any top-line "tomorrow " talent. Trading him for bit parts is pointless.

Lindholm doesnt want to stay here.

We won't get another 1C in a trade for Lindholm. We might get prospects who have a shot at becoming a 1C, but likely no blue chipper.

There are not abundant other options out there for acquiring a 1C.

If it is true that ownership will not allow a trade for pieces seen as a rebuild, then IMO the most likely scenario is that we see Lindy walk for nothing next summer. That's where I am putting my money today.

If they can keep their center depth intact then they can build around them with youth and speed. Things could turn around before too long, and if Wolf is as good as his accolades at the next level the team could be seen as a perennial playoff one in a couple seasons.
