I know "mom and pop" stores aren't immune from this stuff, but I'd be curious to know if the bigger chains are indeed targeted more.

I highly doubt shoplifters engage in any kind of moral calculus when they’re planning their thefts. It’s a straightforward matter of risk-reward.

I think you’re making a lot of assumptions here but to be fair you could very well be right in some or even all cases(I don’t presently have the data to make that determination). With that being said I think you’d agree that in order to determine what is the best approach to addressing the issue of theft we need to better understand what is contributing to the spike. There’s going to be very different solutions necessary for a person who can’t afford to eat who is stealing food vs an organized crime ring that is robbing stores and re-selling the merchandise.

I was watching Mark Roder's YouTube channel (guy who does the glitter bombs for Amazon package thief's) and it looked like that those who took the packages were actually a mix of people including men, women, teenagers, parents, even older people. And the ethnicity was all a mix.
I'd be inclined to believe more brazen robberies and thefts are done are more likely to be done by angry and/or desperate young men, but the data needs to be there to make that claim.

Yeah, totally. Somehow you saw through “whatever” and caught me advocating for smash and grabs and assaulting low wage workers.

It's possible they edit the type of people they choose to put on YT. However, I too was pretty surprised at the demographics of the thieves. People of all ages, genders, and, what appeared to be anyways, economic backgrounds.

You strike me as the type of person who takes a very lax attitude to these types of things with an ahhh, shucks type mentality. If this is generally how you are overall and aren't phased by the continual decline in society and proper ethics, that's totally fine. Having a low stress mentality can be beneficial overall for ones health.
But I also have a sneaky suspicion that your the type of person who would explode and get all worked up about "somebody should do something" "this isn't right"
The type of people who are smashing and grabbing items at the local mall are also the type of people who are doing similar crimes to your friends and family. It's not like the Louie Vuitton thieves at Chinook and the Apple product thieves at Market Mall or whatever have ZERO interest in your items.
How would you actually feel about your items and your families items and property being stolen? Comfortable being a victim? Who you do you think is conducting these types of crime rings? Organized crime. That includes ID theft and property title crime. Some of the worst possible experiences people can go through.
If your not cool with people going after YOUR family and friends, don't be so laxed when it comes others. Just because somebody thinks it's ok to take $50, 100k, 250k from YOUR family via various methods, doesn't mean random posters who think these garbage people need to be stopped are actually wrong.
There are no victimless thefts. Nothing is free. Somebody is paying the financial and emotional costs.

If they don’t want to be assaulted they should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and get better paying jobs

I thought of this too. The most disturbing part of those videos is that in some clips you can see the porch pirates bringing their stolen loot home and opening it in front of their kids. Occasionally, the kids would get involved in the opening and/or disposing of the glittering stink bomb.
Those parents are a special breed of trash.

They wouldn’t need them if they just single handedly stop everyone from stealing. That’s the one and only reason nobody can afford anything.

"The cost of living is really high and people want to defund the police, what do we do?"
"Sacrifice small businesses to the mob and accelerate the financial split between the rich and the poor?"
"I just checked with our big political donors and none of them have a problem with that. Tell our supporters that shoplifting isn't a big deal and that this is actually a form of wealth redistribution, they eat that #### up."

Do you know what defunding the police actually means? If anything it would help, as then the police could actually focus on crime instead of also being forced to act as social workers and public health experts
Don't confuse it with the silly 'abolish the police' movement

There's a big difference between a mom shoplifting food for her kids because she can't afford it & a flahmob ransacking Nordstrom like the video above where guys are taking entire racks of designer purses.
Being somewhere in the middle is the only logical place to be.
Neither treating every theif like a victim of the rich or every theif like they need a beating makes a lot of sense.

It always seemed pretty obvious to me by the name that the general idea was that they are overfunded. Not that they exist. ####ing painful how many people refuse to grasp that.

And you can't even have the conversation because it always just gets shouted down by people that don't even understand the actual concept.
Then if you remind them that a lot of the police are in favour of defunding the police, then they really short circuit and the conversation goes off the rails.

Well you see defund the police is actually a long game conspiracy. Once police presence is removed there will be a chaos in the form of violence and petty crime. People will demand police be reinstated, but this time it will be put in place by the WEF. It will be a global police and they will scrutinize your everymove. It will actually be a part of the global social credit system. The system is going to limit your access to social activities based on your social credit points. If you post the wrong meme they will stop you from going to bars and not allow you to meet women as a means to stop you from reproducing!
The Provincial police of alberta are our last defence against this global EVIL!

Sure, I agree with that over the long-term. In the short term though, you still have these social ills that are causing problems and chaos, and policing is the way to deal with them. It's distasteful, and I see that side, but you can't stop these things by standing there and saying "hey, I'm on your side and advocating for housing, rehabilitation and treatment programs, so can you just stop this rampage?!"
