Is he really this player?

Would you trade McDavid straight up for Matthews?

I think Matthews is top 5 in terms of talent in the NHL.

But is he really the man?

needs to stay healthy, he has been over 85 points one time. Largely due to not playing 82

Highest AAV. MacKinnons AAV is 12.6. Matthews seems content with shorter higher AAv deals. Over 8 years McDavid will make 100 after his rookie deal. Matthews will be a shade under 98, and can reset his value one year later. The guy has done well in making money.

He has played a full season twice in his career that includes 70 games during the covid season that got shut down.

But he has also scored 40 or more goals in 5/7 seasons including the shortened covid season.

so 130 points for Matthews?

It’s no steal, however it is the latest superstar contract. Its a sign the of the future.
It makes the benchmark. Next year we may well see somebody get more going forward.

that's my point...people are acting like this is some great contract and it's really not. Unless he has some career years incoming it won't be great value.

Better than losing him but meh

13.25M is a lot of cap.

McDavid will probably get 15 but he also gets 150 points not 85

You are cherry picking as usual. It was the term that was a good play by the leafs. He was getting this AAV no matter what next summer.

If Mathews has another season like the last one this simply is not a good deal. If he plays up to his Hart level then it's fine.

I'm kind of puzzled why people think this is something great, he was a complete no show in the playoffs against the Panthers and I don't think the guy has ever bodychecked anyone. And zero goals in that series, at this price he better be the best player on the ice every night.

I think mcdavid will be getting more than 15. It’s been the talk that owners want to start swinging the way of nfl and nba where the stars get paid. That’s why when people say $8.5 million for lindholm is to much I don’t think they have been listing to the future landscape

decent deal considering it is only a small raise from his current salary and he is one of the best goal scorers in the league.

needs to do something over a long playoff run though.

I'm trying to do the math here to see where this shapes the landscape. Probably doing it wrong and happy to have it corrected by those stronger in stats than me.

Matthews is a premium 1C in the league, who is younger and scores more goals. Lindholm is older but also a 1C, at least for now.

Matthews $13.25M for four years. UFA at the end.

Lindholm is $9M for eight years. Likely his last major contract.

If we assume Matthews gets 95 points, then it equals about 7.17 points per million. Lindholm would only need 64 points at $9 million to be similar production based on percentage of the cap. Did I do that right?

As I said before Matthews wanted 3 years so Tre got an extra year done. He also got him 250,000 a year cheaper

Leafs would have taken more term if they could get it...the player wanted less years

13.25M is a ton of cap, he will need some career years to make it worth it

Call me on cherry picking if you like, the guy needs to be well over 100 points. Let's see

- 299G, 542P in 481GP
- Most goals scored in the league past 5 years despite playing less games
- Hart, Rocket x2
- 27 when the deal kicks in
- Cap is expected to go up in the next number of years
- UFA at the end of his current contract
- Leafs are in win now mode

Given the circumstances and his resume, what is Tre supposed to do? Wait till the last minute and let him walk for nothing like Johnny? I'm glad Tre is learning from his past mistakes. $13.2M is fair for what Matthews brings.
Even if you want to call it an overpayment, overpaying for a 26 year old top 5 center in the league isn't going to get the Leafs in trouble. Paying someone like Nylander $10M will.

It's a deal that makes sense for both sides. The AAV is only 5% higher than MacKinnon's, and the term is 4 years shorter. I think Tre did well here.

I don't think it's terrible, just nothing special...and it was the player who wanted less years not the team.

MacKinnon is a way better player, especially when it counts. Unless I am remembering it wrong Matthews had ZERO goals against the Panthers

If you break down $$ per point this won't be one of the better deals in the league

McDavid signed a bad deal. There's a reason that McDavid switched his agent (outside of the Oiler's hiring the guy) to Matthews's agent.

The likelihood of Matthews out earning McDavid over his career is likely if McDavid didn't make the switch. Again Matthews is driving the contract structure of the leagues biggest young stars.

People will complain about it...but the reality is the league is changing again on what the path for structuring a team is. Flames need to have the right management and strategy in place to keep up. There will be gaps arise that need to be taken advantage of.
