Brad breaks the “lose superstar for nothing” curse. I do wonder what happens with Nylander now

Just a bit different to see as the Flames up until last year largest AAV was 7 million for Tkachuk and Iggy.

That Iggy contract was $7 million out of a ~$35 million salary cap. That’s like a $17 million contract in todays NHL.

Oh...this is a good deal for both sides...for now.
But I'd wager that Matthews is betting that his 'percentage of Cap' is going to amount to a lot more money in 4 years than it does right now.

Actually, he would be 31 by the time the contract AFTER this one kicks in when the season starts. Turns 26 in September, extension runs from 27-30, and then 31 for the new one.

Ture, he was also the best player in the league when he signed that contract as well.
I don't think Matthews is the best player in the league not even top 2 to have the highest cap hit, but its not a terrible deal.

It isn’t a bad deal when you think of it this way:
So (($11,640,250 x 5) + ($13,425,000 x 4)) / 9 = $12,355,694.40

Best player v highest AAV is always going to be a leapfrog game. Mackinnon's $12.6 AAV was signed last year. McDavid's $12.5 was 2017.

12.6 from 12.5 for a guy coming off a cup win and dominating McDavid isn't a steep jump.
This is a bit higher.
Again its not terrible and agreed it will never be perfect.

High AAV and low term for a young player. The Treliving special. It does go through what should be the very peak of Matthews' prime though.

Honestly? I still think that this is Matthews leading Treliving around by the nose.

Matthews is basically 26, at 30 he'll have a lot of good options for another big one, at 34 he might be broken down and going right into "show me what you got" contracts. He's gambling on himself, but odds are good he'll make tens of millions more this this route.
These high-$ low-term contracts are pretty common with NBA star players, may be the start of a trend. The average career length in the NBA & NHL are both 4.5 years.

GOAT!

Awesome, now we finally know what the ballpark for Lindholm's contract is. Between $4.5M and $13.25M.

Panarin is making $11.64M. Pretty sure he plays LW.

That's because the NBA contract lengths are capped at 4 years.
Something the NHL needs to get in the next lockout.

Except you don't get to do it that way. You have to look at the impact in context. Matthews signed his current deal for 14.64% of the cap. His new deal will eat up 15.87% of the cap. An average is not really representative of the larger impact to the cap structure and how his salary acts as a drag elsewhere for the team.

Good point, but you're slightly off. The 3 year contract he signed in 2005, it was 17.95% of the cap which projects to ~$15M. The 5 year contract signed in 2007, was 13.92% which projects to ~11.6M.

I have said this. I would 100% prefer letting Lindholm walk as a free agent compared to signing him to an 8 year contract that starts at 29.
Neither would be my preferred outcome, but one is better than the other.
