Bi-partisan politics is totally baffling. At the end of the day, most partisans don't believe in anything. They have no morals, principles or ideologies. They just want their side to win. It's extremely easy to come up with mental gymnastics to convince yourself that supporting X cause means support for the left or the right.

That's where the US totally loses me. "Just go ahead and register with the government which political party you support" has to be the most baffling feature of a democracy I've ever heard. It also "locks" people into a team. I can't even imagine the value of doing that.

It is weird. I think part of it is that if they are registered with a party, they they can be involved in deciding who runs, and that sort of thing. By being a party member, they get some say in the process. Not like in Canada, where being a party member doesn't really do anything for you, other than just getting email spam and requests for donations. Although I am sure that happens in the States too.

Biden / the US telling US citizens to leave Belarus immediately and so strongly is an extremely worrying announcement. US intelligence has been extremely solid when it comes to imminent crisis, including the invasion of Ukraine.
I think there may be a major imminent event, and I don't think it will be Belarus invading Ukraine directly, but something worse.
Here is the original announcement for Russia (the US had expected the war to start within days, but Russia delayed at the request of China due to the olympics)
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60342814
For context these are the current level 4 warnings and all pretty self explanatory.

There's a million reasons why a recommendation like that would be made.
Options include for example the fear that Belarus is looking for excuses to use US citizens as pawns and political leverage. For example looking for reasons to confiscate their property and/or put them in jail, or just the worry that that might be going on. Or the worry that the anti-western propaganda situation in Belarus is getting so bad that there's fears US citizens might face random unprovoked violence due to their nationality.
Doesn't necessarily mean there's any particular new development expected.

I mean as bizarre as his takes are at least Yoho actually presents some kind of discussion or writes something that is an opinion, even if nobody in their right mind agrees with it. You on the other hand gum up everything with your pathetic fly by comments to stir the pot because your only purpose on this board is to piss off people or say something utterly stupid. Is Yoho out to lunch with his views? Yup. Is he still a better contributor to CP than you? Yup. You keep doing you though, what a pathetic existence...

Remember when you said you were going to fly to Calgary to fight me and everyone laughed at you because you looked like a total clown? Pathetic existence indeed.

Oh come on, as if I was serious. You are either 10 years old posting out of moms basement of mentally disabled, as if I would fight someone in either situation. I will just throw you back on ignore now like the majority of the board has. You keep trolling away though Nik, you are doing a great job! 👍

I think a big part of it is just that Latvia and Lithuania have closed many border crossings and are likely to close many more shortly. This really limits the ability for Americans to get out on short notice if they need to.
Tensions are higher with Belarus though, that is true. I don't think a conflict is imminent, but Poland has already caught several Russians in Poland who were trying to recruit for Wagner, so you know they are already infiltrating. A mishap or false-flag attack isn't out of the question, and could lead to drastic escalation. I do get the sense that Poland is getting pretty antsy.

Reports that a Russian General has been fired after not being seen publicly since the Wagner rebellion:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66590916
Quote:
One of Russia's leading military figures, Gen Sergei Surovikin, has reportedly lost his job as air force chief after weeks of speculation about his disappearance from public view.
Ria Novosti agency said he had been relieved of his post, citing a source.
For several months Gen Surovikin was in charge of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine but he has not been seen since the Wagner mutiny in June.
Observers believe his removal dates back to the botched rebellion.
One Russian report quoted a defence ministry source as saying he had been dismissed because of a transfer to a new job and he was now on a short vacation.
His role as head of aerospace forces has been taken on by air force chief of staff, Gen Viktor Afzalov, Ria Novosti adds.
During the hours that Wagner mercenaries marched towards Moscow on 24 June, Gen Surovikin appeared in a video appealing to them to return to base.
But his awkward performance was later compared to a hostage-style video. The general was known to have good relations with Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who reserved his loathing for other figures in the defence hierarchy.
In the weeks after the June revolt, there were unconfirmed reports by Russian military bloggers that Gen Surovikin had been detained for questioning. But officials denied he was being held in a pre-trial detention centre and one retired general said that he was merely "resting" and unavailable.

short vacation... you mean like a short 'trip' out of a really high window?
