In this day of age, these first-hand personal videos in 4K quality really make you feel the fear and uncertainty of all the people who are there experiencing it right now. This video is right before the fire jumped the lake.
6:45 is frightening as you see a fire start right beside a cluster of homes and you know there is no hope for them.
Amazing video, when i was a kid a fireman came to our school to teach us the dangers and preventions, I still remember him saying fire has a mind of it's own and will act like the devil to stay alive, we kids all laughed at the time but watching a video like this proves he wasn't kidding.
Amazing nobody died trying to save their homes (hope not anyway)
Given that we had the worst air quality in the world yesterday (and possibly worse this morning) we decided to pack up and head to Calgary. Got the camper and car loaded about 1 pm and left our beautiful place in the North OK. We were finding that the smoke had invaded our house and no matter the filtration or anything else it kept setting off the fire alarms ("carbon monoxide") but more importantly, given that we are only about 3 weeks post-COVID (thanks, kids!)...our lungs were suffering in a way we didn't want to continue.
So off to Calgary.
Interesting note: 2 out of every 5 cars/personal trucks/RVs coming INTO BC were...Albertans. Are they stupid or just don't give two #####s? Beats me.
Edit: yes, I counted, thanks to a certain amount of OCD.
Not everyone would be going to the Shuswap or the Okanagan. Plenty of people heading to the lower mainland, the island, Caribou, eat Kootenays etc.
That said, if you were on the #1 that is strange choice of route for anyone heading west given the road closures and evacuations.

Knock on wood, but it sounds like the fire chief is saying they think that they have turned the corner.

He told a news briefing Sunday that no more homes in West Kelowna had been destroyed by the McDougall Creek wildfire in the past 24 hours and it was possible to begin to "talk about recovery."
I have a flight to take my kid out there on the first. Its definitely not tourism related as he will live there and needs to be enrolled in school. Airport and head north. they gonna block me??

According to this, no. Unless, I would assume, the airspace is still closed on the 1st & those areas are still active scenes and still under evacuation orders. (could I have said 'still' more?)

Maybe they're coming to help?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
At least 50 structures have been lost or damaged to the McDougall Creek wildfire within the City of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation.
West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund says there have been NO structural losses in the Shannon Lake, Talus Ridge, Smith Creek, Rose Valley neighbourhoods as well as the Lenz Road modular home park.
The 50 structure estimate came with a caveat from Brolund that “we're not done yet. And the most damaged neighbourhoods are still to come. “
“However, I think it's important that people begin to understand the scope and scale of what our community is facing.”
Brolund said the numbers of structural losses will certainly climb beyond 50, noting damaged assessments have only taken place in the “easy” neighbourhoods.
“But we're moving into the areas where the fire burned hottest. I describe it as a hurricane, trees pushed over by their roots. This is the kind of neighbourhood that we're in today. So undoubtedly, that number will grow higher.”

Five homes have been confirmed lost to the wildfire burning in Kelowna's Glenmore area over the past several days.
During Monday morning's press conference, Kelowna Fire Chief Travis Whiting said they've confirmed five homes have been destroyed by the fire, which was sparked Friday morning in the Clifton Road area.
“Our damage and structural loss was really in one specific area with approximately five homes in that area. We've had no other structural loss in the area that we've been able to find, but there are other areas that we need to look at.”
While he didn't specify the location of the losses, homes are believed to have burned west of the Kelowna landfill, across Glenmore Road.

Two or three homes were lost in Lake Country's Okanagan Centre area when the wildfire tore through the community Friday morning, and several more were damaged.
Lake Country Fire Chief Darren Lee provided the estimate of damaged homes during Monday's press conference.
“Until we actually get around and specifically check for which ones have damage, I would say it's two to three right now that were lost and several more [that were damaged],” he said.

The request in BC is for NO vacation travel to affected areas. But also to keep highways clear for essential travel. I'd hope most people are courteous and thoughtful about this.

So if I've absconded with the entire Cirque de Soleil you're saying I shouldnt bring the entire Troupe to Kelowna?
But they bring Joy and Happiness!

This Order does not impact travel through to other regions, but the public is asked to avoid non-essential travel to the central Interior and southeast of B.C.
Roadways must remain clear for emergency response operations.
I have no skin in the game but the order doesn't sound as strict as you are saying.
